Default Basic Ham Radio Course May 9/10 2015

Ham Radio Course May 9/10, 2015
Once again, the Chilliwack Amateur Radio Club will be putting on a ham radio basic operator's course on May 9/10, 2015.

The format is geared to getting our students to the point where they can pass the exam which is 100 questions, multiple choice. Passing grade is 70. 80 or more will give you basic with honours, qualifying you to use HF (1.8 MHz - 30 Mhz). 2 Metre VHF (144-148 MHz) is available to anyone with a passing grade. This is the frequency range we ordinarily use off-road.

The class will be taught from 9am to 5pm on Saturday, and from 1pm to 3pm on Sunday with the exam being the last part of the course.

The cost is $95. A $50 deposit is required by May 1, 2015. We now have online payment available at our website http://www.chwkarc.ca so just click the link to make a deposit. Failing that, a cheque payable to the Chilliwack Amateur Radio Club will be accepted. The balance is to be paid no later than the beginning of the course Saturday morning. The course is limited to 20 students on a first sign up, first served basis.

The fees cover the entire course, the book of materials (you get to keep), the exam cost, and a one year membership in the Chilliwack Amateur Radio Club.

The class will cover only enough to pass the exam. It is not intended to be an in-depth study of radio communications. You will not learn operations, how to choose a radio, or any of the various aspects of the amateur radio hobby. Once the course is over, we will be happy to talk to you about any or all of these things.

The class will be taught by me and by Ken Long. Ken is a certified examiner and he will administer the final exam. You will need to bring a pen/pencil and a basic calculator (cell phone calculator is fine).

The location of the class is the Chilliwack Emergency Ops Centre, 5725 Tyson Road, Chilliwack, BC. (this is immediately beside Twin Rinks skating rink). In the event that we have a larger number of people signing up for the course, we may move the location in which case this post will be updated.

This course is being put on primarily for the outdoor (4x4, hiking, ATV) community. We recognize the importance of good communications when you are away from civilization. Ham radio is the best option for maintaining good communications in the absence of infrastructure such as cell towers, wifi hotspots, and landline phones. You will learn how amateur radio is better than GRS (CB), FRS, and GRMS.

If you are planning to sign up, please send me an e-mail so I can add you to the list.

    Doc.
Find a local examiner to see if they will administer the test.
Look here for the test questions. https://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/025.nsf/eng/h_00040.html
You may need to read a few RIC's here https://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/smt-gs...h_sf06073.html
My wife challenged the test about 4 years ago without any studying and achieved her Basic with Honours. Both the examiner and I were scratching our heads. She said she overheard me talking with others.

Yeah, I really should just take a few practice tests and focus on where I fail, aiming at the 70% mark...
