    Default Second gen roof rack

How is everybody mounting their roof racks to their vehicles? I have a roof rack on my truck now but it is bolted to the factory rails on the roof with 4 m6 bolts... Originally the rack was only going to be a place to mount lights, store my hi lift and a couple other things. The rails themselves are only held in place by what appears to be sheet metal screws. I want to put on a rtt but don't want it falling off my roof when the girlfriend and I are sleeping, Which is what I'm worried about now.

So basically I'd like to see how you guys are mounting your racks. My plan is to replace the rails on the roof with 1x1 steel square tube securely bolted and sealed to the roof. But to do that I need to completely remove my headliner and that's a pretty big headache. Just wondering if there is an easier way that any aftermarket racks bolt on that you guys may have. I have a second gen 4runner but any photos would be great for design ideas. Thanks guys!

I have my RTT mounted to my stock rack and no problems after over a year.

I have a Gobi on the Xterra. It looks great and performs great too. Very solid piece of kit. A bit on the expensive side, but if you can afford it, I recommend it !
I have the RTT directly bolted on, a very solid installation ...

I was playing around with my roof rack yesterday. Definitely not ready for an rtt yet. The factory mounting rails on the roof are far too flimsy. I'm going to replace them with the 1x1 square tube as I had discussed earlier. That way I know it'll be stronger than it needs to be

I have an '07 Xterra with a CVT Mt Rainier RTT. I have it held on with a set of Fourtreks rings (http://fourtreks.com/modular_clamp_rings.html) and rectangular Thule bars.
Here are a couple of pics showing how I did it. It's is solid and survived a lot of offroading.

BajaRacks are pretty much the standard for a lot of rigs, For the Tacoma they bolt down through the OEM rack mounts.. there are a lot running around with RTTs up top and I haven't heard of any coming off.

I'm talking to Jason at Cruisin about Tacoma 2nd gen racks right now

BajaRack makes some good stuff. I found this thread on a custom RTT rack for the 2nd gen Xterra.

I might even go that route over a Gobi if the cost was that good.
