s, my main worry is the load carying and handling. The hight is ok, I find them the very soft though when loaded I'm about 2" lower. I also find it very hard to drive on Mountain hwy's its very tippy. I will try changing around the shock set up first and move from there. I think standing the Shocks up from this / to this | | will help some as now there doing verry little.
As my truck as been driven over the last year the front has started to thankfully come down. I'm looking and trying to reduce the hight as much as I can. With the front coming down now I know I can take out about 1-2" of hight in the rear. The down dide to all this is the fact that I need to move the rear axle back (regaurdless of what I do) the tires hit the front of the wheel well at full compresson and I have about 3" of room at the back.
My other option is to get the Trail gear 4" (58") rear springs and new frame mounts. that would give me the lift I need with out blocks and maybe a bit stiffer. The problem with this is its a rock crawling spring and may not be to good when loaded. The nice thing with the long 63" Chev springs is the ride on the logging roads, its so smooth.
Got lots to think about this Winter, trying to do this fix with a little money as possible.
If I can get the hight down 2" I will be keeping the 33's as I feel there is not need to go bigger and stess other componets if not needed.
Jeremy
p.s. I need ot keep in mind that I will adding 200lbs of bumper and tire out hthe back of the truck with the new bumper too. And then another 150lbs in the front with bumper and winch.

So with the suspension setup on my truck I have been wanting to make the most of what I have and also get the truck a bit lower. I was thinking about leaving it as is and getting 35" tires to make it look abit better and not as tall. The tires I have now have over 60% tread left and I figure why go though all the cost of new tires and a re gear yet again.
So the plan right now is look at getting a smaller block in the back (3.5" now) and getting a 1-2" block. At the same time reinstall the overloads on the springs to keep them from going revere arc and also ride and fully loaded road manners. The over loads will ad about 1/2" to the height.
As well as doing that the next thing will be shocks. The real problem with the rear is the fact that I have them in a poor position mainly because of the length. Now I have rote off the 12" shocks just yet but I'm looking at getting 10" as a possible replacement. I will also be installing bump stops of the same style in the front (progressive).
I'm also hoping to get the front down some too. First thing to do will be get proper bump stops and get them sized right. As the truck sits right now I have been constantly hitting the front bump stops (there very hard urethane). I'm looking at getting more of a progressive bump stop and not the lose you fillings that I have now. Any one know of any good bump stops?
The next thing to do on the front is start playing around with springs and shocks. The springs that are in it are a +3" and the smallest of the IFS eliminator kits made for the 2nd gen 4runner like mine. The springs are still tall, I have a bit of room to play with (steering arm frame clearance). The one thing keeping me from using it is the bump stops and the 12" shocks. When on the bump stops I have about 1/2in of shock left, so I will ether need to move the shock upper mount (pain in the ass) or get 10" shocks. I do not really need the 12" of travel, I do not do much rock crawling and do not think the shocks are anywhere near full exstention at the full droop.
Let me know what you all think.

Going to get out there and masure this weekend and see what I have to play with. I have a feeling my shocks are longer than his but atlaest its a starting point.

Update on this, I sold my 12" shocks and got some 10" travel shocks. I installed one tonight and to my disappointment it looks like I messed up on my measuring. Looking at the shock on the truck I have about 2" of down travel and 8" of up. Not sure how I messed this up so bad but now I'm stuck with it. :mad2:
I guess I have a few options one being lower the front of the truck some with removing leafs and making the bump stops just short enough that the steering dose not hit the frame.
The other option is see how the wheght of the front bumper and winch lower the front of the truck.
Finally i can take the 12" shocks off the back and put them up front and use the 10" in the rear.
Got to take a better look at things when the weather is a bit dryer, this time I will measure a few times and make sure I do not make a mistake again.

Jeremy,
I should have mentioned this when you were over but I tossed these on my shocks last summer and I'm pretty happy with them. I don't have bumpstops in the rear and these keep my shocks from bottoming. They were an absolute (insert cussword) to get on though.
Not sure if you can utilize them but they were dirt cheap. Taran at BCC carries them.

Thanks Axel, The shock bumps look good. I may get a set for the rear depending how I work it all out.
The rear axle is going to have to be moved 1-1.5" back from were it is now.
Kind of getting a bit pissed looking at the front of my truck now. After seeing yours tonight and seeing how low it is with the 12" shocks I know getting the 10" ones was a mistake. I'm going to get them on and see how bad it looks. If I need to I still have 12" shocks in the rear and can move them to the front and then make the 10" work in the rear.

OK I talked to my guy at Sport trucks and he has no problem exchanging the 10" travel shocks for the 12" ones. They also have them in stock!!!
Now I just need to make sure 10000% that they will work and that I do not need the 10".

Yeah I remember, I'm more interested in the remaining up travel in the shock at the height you are at. I also want to make sure that the shocks are in the same placement.
Can you measure how much up travel you have next time you are in the garage? That would help out a lot.
I will also be making a front bumper and putting a Winch out there too so there will be an easy 200lbs going on the front still.

So I flexed my truck out on the retaining wall between my place and Steve's last night. At full stuff (on the bump stop) I had 19.5in from eye to eye. So with the 12" travel shocks I would still have almost 2 full inches of up travel.
I also measured the drooped side, it was not at full droop but the 10" shock would have been limiting droop at that point. I still had an easy 3" of droop left form were I measured.
So now I know that I can shorten my bump stops almost 2", this was a flex test so hitting a bump on the road would have left more shock showing as the axle is moving straight up.
So I'm ordering the 12" shocks again and some soft urethane bump stops. I'm then going to cut down my bump stops and should be good to go. :woot:
:welder:
Cool, so how much uptravel are you going to have at ride height?
Jeremy

About 4-5" till the bump is fully compressed and the shocks are 1/2in form bottoming.

I got a ARB bull bar and Warn M8000 yesterday. Both are in decent shape for being on the front of a stock truck for 10 years. The guy lost the winch controller some were and the cable is kind of sketchy. I got a great deal on the two and having the missing winch controller made the deal better.
I'm looking at getting a winch controller and synthetic winch line. The steel one is shot so might as well upgrade :D
I will be working on getting it all fitted soon. This bumper was made for my stock truck so with having the solid axle swap will make mounting it a bit diffrent. Looking at it yesterday I do not think it will take too much.
I will make sure to fully document this mod.........with out pics

So since I did not get a controller for the winch I have been looking at my options. I can get the standared hand controler for $90 or I can get the cool new Wirless controler for $160. What are peoples thoughs of the Wireless option?
I am thinking that the wirless would be nice in all areas. Use in the cab or use outside looking at opsticales or anything else. The other nice thing is I do not need to worry about the wire getting eaten by the winch.

It's all garbage... just give the winch to me... thanks!
I'd go for the wired controller personally. Unless the wireless has a proven track record for reliability. When winching you'd want to be comfortable that you don't need to point your remote in a certain direction or have a problem with it when you're in a pinch to shut off the winch etc. A wired one with enough length can't be that bad... and it should be able to hang off your side view mirror and even hang inside the door etc.
As long as it's a reliable wireless... we all love technology and goodies... and the price is not that huge of a difference.... then consider wireless.
Hope my rant makes sense...

Yes it dose and it makes good sence the same way I feel. I work with Wirless networks all day and now how bad they can be. I'm sure Warn has done a lot of work with them to make them reliable and safe. I'm also thinking that if I get a hand controler I can also make an incab controle. That way I have the option of in truck use or out of truck use.
All the wired controllers I have seen have about 12ft of cable so that would easaly reach my cab.

The price difference is a no brainer for me. I would go with the wire. Would the wireless work with your winch anyway. I would imagine the control module (solenoid box) is different.
Also I would post up on some of the forums. You might find someone with a controller kicking around. How many pins is it 3, 4 or 5?

Yeah thats the way I'm leaning, I looked at it last night and it looks like a 5 pin.
It would be nice to have wireless as there's less to worry about as in having a cable get snagged or sucked in the drum, less to store in the truck and obviously the convenience of it. But then there's always the chance of dropping the remote and damaging it or loosing it since it's not attached to anything. I would bet the reliablility would be fine, the wireless technology can't be more complicated than a garage door opener or a car remote, plus we know Warn makes good stuff.
That being all said I don't think I would pay the price difference to upgrade to the wireless myself.

Pictures!!!!!
OK before the pictures I worked on the front bumper a bit tonight. It was raining and I was not able to work on the rear. I started by taking a good close look at bumper and winch.
First the bumper, it looks great its got a few chips and scrapes on it but is not bent at all. I do not even think that it needs to be powder coated again. The flash makes it look a lot worse than it is. A lot of the red rust looking stuff on it is Bark Mulch from the back of the truck.

Now onto the winch. Its a Warn M8000, I got it with out the controller and I now know why. The Winch was sold to me as a working winch, a pone further inspection its not a working winch. It looks like they tried to remove the winch and broke off both the poz and neg poles off the solenoids. The winch had been used recently the cable was polishes and had fresh gouges in it. I'm hoping that once I replace the two damages solenoids it will work. The cable was complete garbage (know this when I got it I could tell right away) so I will be saving up for some synthetic winch rope. On to the pictures.
Winch cable all removed.

I think since my cable was so messed up I'm going to just go and get the Synthetic rope. No point in getting more cable and then synthetic rope at a later date. I cant believe how much the cable weighs
I also busted off a mounting bolt in the winch, got to take a look at that in the next day or two looks like a pain.

Great thanks for the link, I will be getting together a list of parts. Did you just t-mail them with what you needed and they helped you out or did you need to find part numbers.
There are a mind boggling amount of winch rope suppliers out there and they all say there's is best lol. I have found some that were in the $800 dollar range
Fist things first, get the winch working lol.
A guy at work said he had his Warn completely rebuilt by I think it was Burnaby Auto electric for a cheap price. Not sure how they would compare in parts pricing but it might be worth looking into.
Also when I worked in Richmond we used brighouse auto electric (also in richmond) for all our starter and alternators, very good stuff from there.

I'm not sure what t-mail is but they have exploded parts diagrams with the part numbers and an order form. You'll figure it out. I doubt you'll need anything anyway. Just replace the solenoid and give the winch a good cleaning and greasing and it'll probably be fine.
Unless they used it as a submarine there probably isn't much wrong with it. It doesn't look that old.

I looked at that link and its very good! Prices are not to bad ether. I cant see the solenoids on there though, they have the whole solenoid pack but no break down of it.
Tonight if the rain comes back and I cant work on the rear I'm going to start cleaning up the bumper and Winch.

Yeah if you can, maybe see when kind of price I am looking at for solenoids.
I'm also looking at getting a stronger alternator made in the 100-120amp area. A friend of mine has an Uncle that owns a alternator and starter repair shop. He said it would not cost much to up them to 100+ amps.

Only several thousand dollars more and you should have a pretty capable rig. Welcome to the money pit. lol.
See your problem is you have already done all this LOL. I'm just trying to catch up :D
I have also made some headway on the OBA setup. I believe I am going to get the ViAIR install kit and run the VW pump with a small 2 gallon bottle. Its only going to be feeding a air chuck in the rear and the front. Should be good for filling up tires.......and blowing off dust :headspin:
I have also lined up a dealer installed A/C system complete. The best part about this 4runner is they are all wired for the A/C and all the A/C systems in them were dealer installed as an option. So Saturday I will be picking up all the A/C stuff to get my truck cool in the summer. Last year was brutal a few times....July long anyone?

Well I got the new Hand controller and 2 replacement Warn Solenoids.
The controller is nice the solenoids though were wrong, the ones I have in my winch are the older lay down side pole ones. All the new Winches and winches sold after about 2002 has the newer style solenoids.
The problem is the old ones have been discontinued and are not available anywhere. I called Warn and talked to Rich there (very helpful guy BTW) and said they indeed they are no longer available. He was nice enough to help me with the wiring diagram for my older winch as well as some of my questions.
He was also able to give the number of 4 dealers he thought may still have stock on the older solenoids. 3 of them were here in BC and the one he know for sure had then was in Redding, CA. I called all the local places except for on in Price George. With out luck, so I called Redding4x4, they had lots but were unwilling to ship or have anything to do with a Canadian sale . They basically hung up when they herd I was from Canada.
So I called the Place in Price George as a last ditch effort and guess what....they had 6 in stock. He even said WARN was in the process of re releasing the older solenoids. Just in case I ordered 4 to be safe, never know if any of mine are any good. They cost me a bit more the ones I got from Lordco were $20 each the right ones for my winch were $36. I should have them on Monday. Interior 4wd is a great place to do business with so far, professional and knowledgeable.

Well today has been a great day! With the much appreciated help of Kelly and Steve we were able to get my truck ready to go. We were able to get the ARB on (looks awesome!), rear bumper welded and ready to go on, oil changed, PS leak fixed, loose shackle nut tightened (read death wobble) and installed OLC stickers. Tonight I was able to get it washed and looking pretty.
I also seem to have the first burn of the year on my neck:D
Thanks for all the help Steve & Kelly!!! :mj:

Well a bit of an update. Saturday I spent the day moving my rear axle back 1" and redoing my shock placement.
On the Easter trip I had a scare with the lack of stability in the back of my truck. On the road going around corners it was less stable than I had though and almost ended up rolling.
So the plan was to reposition the rear axle as it was a bit to far forward and hitting the front of the wheel well on compression. So I started by measuring it all out and I in fact found that my rear spring perches were 1/2" out of each other. Not sure how me managed that but I was going to fix it. So after cutting off the front mounts for the rear springs I measured 12" from the body mount back (spring bolt hole will be at 11") and tacked them into place. I also tipple checked to make sure they were all the same measurements and I got it all square.
Once I tacked them into place I bolted the springs back in and checked shackle angle (started with 47deg and ended up with 51deg). I also was hopping with the moval of the rear axle that my drive shaft would now be the right length and it was 1.75"-2" of slip showing not the .75" I had before unloaded and loaded I had zero.
After all of that was done I then burned in the brackets and was ready to move onto the rear shock placement. they were like this /\ before and I know that was most to of the rear stability problem there. So I now have them in a vertical position with a slight rearward lean. I have 5" of up travel and 6" of droop but the main thing is there like this now | |.
Its amazing how 1" can change things so much, the truck even looks better with the rear wheels a bit further back.
Tomorrow I am going to insure it for the day and get it on the road and make sure there are no funny wobbles or anything.
Thursday Robin and I are are heading back to Nehatlatch for a few days, looking forward to unwinding and relaxing up there.
Once I get back its time to get an exhaust that I can go though AirCare with built and finish the rear bumper.
I have also got all the parts now to fox the winch and just need to get the cable for it and mount it. I also have all the A/C stuff here now as well as all the replacement O rings and condenser dryer. Just need to install all that and get it charged and hope for the best lol. I will be doing that when I install the winch as the bumper needs to come off for both.
My OBA system is still in the works too, I am looking for a Semi air brake tank to keep cost down and will be getting the VIAIR install kit.
That's all for now, I will be back with an update after the test run!

Well looked at the truck again tonight.
Its been relegated to the side of the house as I broke quite a few things last time out July long weekend.
So I made a list of things that need fixing to get it back on the road.
1) Fix or replace gas tank.
2) Replace bad shackle nut in the front.
3) Replace front spring bushings and look at making a phanhard bar.
4) Exhaust
5) Install add a leaf and remove as much block as possible then set up shocks.
I also want to get a few other things done.
1) A/C install
2) Rear sump oil pan
3) finish rear bumper
4) OBA
5) Front & rear soft bump stops to allow more up travel.
I have all the parts needed other than the bump stops and some small bits for the OBA.

If you install an add-a-leaf in the rear make sure it is as long as possible. The longer the better. Otherwise you will really stress the leaf pack and will end up breaking it.

Yeah I got as long as I was able too, they said this is the longest add a leaf they make I would say about 36" long. I'm also going to reinstall my over load springs as well. Just experiment and see what makes it stable and still flex ok. Stability is the number one thing though.
I'm still looking at ways to get to front down a bit more as well. The truck has settled in well but its still quite tall for the tire size I have. Going to mess around with leafs and bump stops in the front and see if I can get it working well.
Axle how is the 3.4L working out? How is the millage in comparison to the 3.0?
One other thing I forgot to put on the list of wants to do is the rear fender rust repair and linex of the lower portion of the body. I have also looked at the winch and I have all the parts needed to get that working now too other than the cable.

Sounds great! I am trying to get the 4runner back to level that I can drive it as my main transport again and to do that I need better millage. Right now its not to bad really, last summer on a all hwy tank of gas I got 500kms on that tank. It was all the tank had though I was on vapor getting to the pump.
I am hoping that if I do the 3.4L swap I get at least that and better millage in town than I get now 320-370k per tank.
Starting to keep my eyes open for a 3.4L or wrecked 4runner/taco with a 5spd 3.4L to part and maybe get an e-locker out of in the proses.

Bit of an update:
I now have all the O rings and parts for the A/C install I got some PAG oil to install the O rings. I have also found that a lot of the A/C I got is not in good shape the Hi pressure line seems to quite weak and may have been kinked at some point. The condenser box is also broken and in bad shape as well as the relay box.
I was able to find a 93 4runner just like mine being parted in Tacoma and its also got a good gas tank. So on this Saturday I am headed down to pick it all up. I am holding off on replacing the O rings till I know what I am going to use the new set up or the one I have already. I also found that Lordco only carry's the cheap recharge kits and they are not cheap and all I need out of them is the R134 valves. Hope the new stuff has the R134 valves.
Tonight I worked on rebuilding the Solenoid box from the Winch. All new Solenoids and cleaned it all up like new....mostly. Steve cam over and we tried to jump the winch motor with a battery and jumper cables. It did not work though and I have a bad feeling the motor is dead or seized......damn this is costing a lot. :mad2:
Now that I am down to about 30min of light after work I will not be able to do any big work on it till Saturdays.
Jeremy
Should have some more updates tomorrow.
Jeremy
09-15-2009, 12:39 AM
Just found a good test for the winch motor and tried it.
1. Put the winch in freespool.
2. Disconnect the positive lead from the battery (leave the ground lead attached). I hooked this to my winches chassis.
3. Label and disconnect the three cables that run from the control pack to the three posts on the motor.
4. Stamped next to the three posts on the motor will be "A", "F1" and "F2". Run a small jumper wire (5"-6" dead lead, 8 ga. will work just fine) from "A" to "F1" and put power from the battery (jumper cables work good) to "F2". The winch motor should run in one direction at this time.
5. Next, place the jumper wire from "A" to "F2" and put power from the battery to "F1". The winch motor should run in the opposite direction at this time.
Worked a treat, even with a very low test battery it worked awesome in both directions so crisis averted.
Just need to get the cable now (Princes Auto) and install that. Now before you go on about cable and rope I know the benefits of rope and would much rather do that than cable. Problem with the rope is the cost, its so damn expensive. I would feel a lot better and also save a bunch of weight with the rope over the cable but right now its not an option.

So since the last update not a lot has been done till Last Saturday. I was able ot get my old spring pads chopped off the axle. Rear leaf packs back together with a large Add A leaf and the factory overload back in. I also have my new gas tank all ready to go in I just need to drop the one i have and swap over the pump hanger.
I have been looking at the rear shocks and I think I have an idea (pending flex tests of the leaf's).
I am also revisiting the front of the truck as well. Now that I have the 2wd oil pan in there I have lots of room for the steering on compression. I have found a place in California that makes springs for low Solid axles swaps. They are made of USA spring stock and made to there specs in the US. So no more crappy china made springs. The problems I am having in the front is spring rate with the heavy v6 and ARB and soon Winch and A/C its all ready pushing the Springs to there max. I have 3.5" of compression right now and am always hitting the bump stops even on the road. Going ot try cutting the bump stops down a bit first and see how that dose. After that its new spring time.

This Saturday again gifted us with nice weather and I was able to spend all day working on the truck.
I started off by swapping gas tanks, and the 1/2 tank of gas that was in it. The tank I am replacing my old one with is in worse shape than the one I have taken out. There is a bit of rust in it and quite a bit of grit (tried to clean it all out but was not not able to). So I am going to hold onto the tank that I took out and get it repaired and also fit a new furl level sender (mine only shows full, 1/2 and then 1/4, E I looked at the sender and the contacts are worn off on the areas it would be in from full to 1/2. I am also still planing on an auxiliary gas tank in the back in the 17-20 gallon area (later project).
I then got started on the axle, I started with grinding of the remainder of the old spring pads. Then got help from Steve and my father to move it back under the truck. Once I had it there I got new U bolts and hardware and took the new spring pads and started setting it up. I got the weight of the truck back on the them and the pinion with in a few degrees before I had to call it a day. I have to say I'm very happy to have totally removed the lift block and to also have the back of the truck about 2" lower. The height its at now looks perfect for me. I also still have most of my camping gear in the truck so I would consider it loaded. Next nice day I have to work on it I will be doing to final set up of the axle and then welding the spring pads on.
I did some measuring and it looks like my ground the frame height is 24" in the back and 27" from ground the rear bumper. I'm quite happy with that outcome.
I also last week talked to the guy about my front end and he told me a bit about the springs he makes. They are made by a local to him spring shop to his specs. They use US springs stock (no more cheap Chinese springs that do not hold there spring) and he makes then to work on solid axle swap trucks with high steer and factory steering box location. He also has them set up to work with the factory rear shackles to improve pinion angle and also Castor. One other benefit of using factory spring shackles is that I can use factory Toyota bushings.
If I get all that I will be about 2-2.5" lower static and lose about 3" of over all travel (droop mainly). I will also need to change front shocks again back to 10" travel. I was talking to Steve on Saturday and we were talking about air bumps so I am looking into those as an option too.

I need to get the Hi pinion so I can use 4H though
I wouldn't count on being able to use 4HI just by adding the hi-pin alone. Without duals and a $1000 balanced driveshaft it's likely you will still get a fair bit of vibration. It will be BETTER with the hi-pin but you'll still be forced to relatively slow speeds.
Cutting and turning the knuckles, in addition to the hi-pin might allow you to get by without the duals as long as you don't need to cut and turn too much. Otherwise it'll negatively affect your castor angle.
In either case I would recommend you get a Tom Woods driveshaft or equivalent.

I have a stock 85 high angle cv shaft that I got a few monthes ago. Looking at it + the combination of the hi pinion and lower springs and maybe stock shackls or the short ones linked above should help. Well see, right now anything will be better. Let me know how those shakles work out for you.

Will do.
I think any amount of lift is going to be too much for the DS without a cut and turn or duals. (or both) How usable are you hoping 4hi is going to be?
Mine is useable up to about 50km/h. That's with a hi-pin, duals and a sloppy, unbalanced driveshaft and pretty low springs. I think with a nice DS I could get over 60km/h. With a mild cut and turn on top of that I'm sure I could do Hwy speeds.

I really just want to be able to use 4hi, right now I can only use 4wd in low as its vibrates so bad. I really cant go at all over 10kms/hr with it. I really think half my problems or more in the supper sloppy TG slip. The amount of play in it is amazing. I am hoping that with all the changes I will be able to use the stock 85 shaft and get to 50kms/h. I would just like to be able to use 4wd in the snow with out needing 4low to keep it from vibrating apart.
I am for sure going to be sacrificing flex for those mods but I feel in the end it will be worth it. I'm changing from a rock crawler set up to a more hwy/Overland friendly setup. It will still flex a lot more than the IFS I once had that's for sure.
. I'm curious to see if I lose much articulation with them though. The ones I have now flex a lot and I think contribute to the articulation I have. Don't want to lose too much. I liiiiike articulation.
I don't think you'll loose very much, it'll just make your springs twist more. An unloaded spring will twist very easily, but a loaded one may not depending on how progressive it is.
Also keep in mind that having properly setup bumpstop will aid in articulation as it creates a pivot point. This will also depend on how close it is to the tire.
I really think half my problems or more in the supper sloppy TG slip. The amount of play in it is amazing.
From my experience sloppy slip joints don't create vibrations (obviously there are exceptions to that), they tend to straighten out when loaded. If I remember correctly your pinion angle is way off. It should be 1 or 2 degrees higher than your shafts angle (the opposite of a rear axle as it twists up when loaded where the front twists down) I bet that's your main problem right now. Going to a high pinion will obviously help, but ultimately twisting your knuckles to keep good caster and setting your pinion angle will be the best bet. Or you can go this (http://www.4xshaft.com/multiCV.html) route.

Yes my pinion angle is extream, but right now I have a single cardon and with those the angles are suppose to be the same on the top and bottom. With the double cardon you want the single cardon end pointing at or with in a degree or two of the TC.
Not sure maybe all of this is in vain and I should just live with it or sell it. I figure the hi pinoin and lower lift will help maybe I am wrong. I know the TG joint on the bottom of my front shaft is crap, was really notchy when I got it.
The big think is removing the unnecessary lift I have now. With 33's I do not need the 5" of lift I seem to have now. Now that I have the rear back down I can tell that the front really needs to come down.
Seems to be my thing doing everything 3 x over to get it right :mad2:

The Hi-pin will definitely help. So will the CV joint and lowering it. I am using the TG sloppy shaft as well and like I said I get up to 50km/h. However my Tcase is pretty far back.
In either case the Hi-pin is a good upgrade. More clearance and reverse cut gears are stronger. You want to lower the truck anyway and you can always still use the hi angle TG DS.
Here is some Driveshaft porn for you. Not trying to discourage you just trying to make the point that In my opinion this setup is pretty good but it still vibrates. Don't want you getting your hopes up, that's all. I think if I spent a bundle on a really nice DS I could go a pretty decent clip. I probably won't ever cut and turn the knuckles though.
If I ever buck up and buy a nice shaft I'll let you know what kind of difference it made. Maybe I'll temporarily toss some 4 degree shims under the front axle to see how much difference rotating my pinion up more will make. I have some kicking around the garage somewhere.

My mistake, I thought you we're running a double cardon shaft. I'm not sure what the TG shaft is good for, but I would think your still beyond it's operating angles and that's your vibe problems.
Instead of dumping money into that HP diff you could get that shaft I linked to up top. I'd call them and get more info, it could solve all you vibe problems for less than the HP diff. Obviously the HP is nice to have but perhaps it's not necessary. Just a thought.

Yes the TG one will still be a possibility, I have just been really put off by its quality. If anything I will keep it as a trail spare. The Hi-pinion has lots of benefits yes, I am looking forward to getting it and installing it. The springs, shocks and shackles may need to wait a bit. May start with the shackle upgrade first and go from there.

Sero, the Tg shaft doesn't come with a joint on it. You have to weld your own on. I put a hi angle Double Cardan on mine. Jeremy put a reg. u-joint on his.

And that's a big difference there, for any type of high speed a single cardan shaft typically can't be used at high angles.

Yeah I just have a single cardon on mine now. I have a high angle double cardon but have not put it on yet its off a factory solid axle 85 4runner. Once I have the hi pinion and the lower front springs I should only have the pinion about 1" lower than it was on a stock 85 solid axle truck.
I would like to do dual cases but the cost involved with that is making it a distant dream and I'm not sure its necessary for what I want to do with it.

Well i got a message back from the guy that makes the low SAS springs. He makes them to be about 2-2.5" over stock height. He said you can clear 33's with it but that's about it (I'm fine with that). He also said you can get any spring shop to make them and dose not have to be from him. His are $450US for a set of springs, bit more than I was wanting to spend but maybe worth it.
Has any one ever had springs made locally or have any idea were to get them made? If so then what do I tell them to get them made? Ok maybe the $450 is worth it lol.
What do you think? Advice input?

Scored a used ARB air locker from a friend for $400, just need to find were to get the switches and solenoids then install. Saves me from the thought of trying out a Zip locker and always having that thought in the back of my head.
Also ordering a Hi-pinion for the front and "better than stock" birfs. I also got Marlin crawler axles seals so I can stop the grease leak out of the knuckles.
I'm still looking at lowering the front of the truck a bit as well. The rear is a bout were i want it now (2.5" lower) but do not have the tire swing out or bumper finished so I may need a small block or Alcan springs.
For the front I think getting the $450 springs is really the best way to go. I can try pulling leafs out of what I have but then I lose more spring rate. I am also going ot run stock shackles as they will drop it about 1/2 -1" and improve caster some. I also got some nice soft Daystar bump stops for the front as well.
Almost got a plan now........

Well with the house purchase the truck plans are suffering. I am still going to install the ARB I have it and just need to put it in. Stuff like custom springs packs and Hi pinion diff's are going to have to go on the back burner and be saved for. I have set myself up with a small budget for the toys but nothing is going to get done fast. For now its make it run and get it back on the road.

That seems to be the only way for us regular folk. Save up the money/parts until your ready to put it in and then save again. Building them is part of the fun, or planning the build I guess, sometime the actual building can be frustrating:(.

Well I got a list of parts that I need to make my ARB Air Locker work, I called Sport Trucks and talked to Adam (good guy dealt with him lots).
The parts that I need to get this ARB up and working will be $230.95 + tax. most of it is in stock but some needs to come from ARB and is about a week out. So I am going to make this my first project to focus on.
I have all the bits and pisses to get the shocks in the rear all sorted out now and will work on that once I can flex it out a bit. I also have some 2.25" pipe for my exhaust as well so I can get it to pass AirCare. I'm not going to mess with putting in a high flow cat or muffler just want to keep it cheap and get it going.

Never had any luck with getting them on the phone or via e-mail. I will only go so far to give some one my business. I believe I left 2-3 messages to get my sliders welded on too ( still sitting at the side of the house not on the truck). I stopped waiting for a call back long ago. The only part I did get from them was a long spline DS and it was the same price as NSOR and Sport Trucks.
Also Sport trucks is 2min from my place and the savings in gas vs. driving to Mission for the same price part......

Well had a productive weekend, I got the rear shocks all fixed and damage from last trip fixed.
I then went and started on the A/C install. I have that 95% done just need two O rings and a charge.
I also cut out all the crap wiring in the truck that I and the previouse owner did. So I will be going though all that and redoing it.
I have also traded my roof rack for a roof pod, its fiberglass and much lighter than the rack I had in the past.
Good weekend all round lots of work done.
I was also able to get most the parts together for the OBA system. I am hoping to strip the pump down a bit and beable to mount it under the hood.

Well on Saturday I got the last of the A/C installed and bolted together. Also got he belt on and ran the truck for a min and found that the tensioner was seized and melting the belt. SO I took that off and am ordering a new one from Toyota today. Once that is done its all ready for a vac down and charge. Steve and I will do that one week night maybe later this week if I can get the parts.
I'm also going to try and line it up so that I can get the truck into Randy's shop for the tail pipe work on the same day as the A/C (only need one permit then). Then I can get it air cared and ready for the road as far as that is concerned.
We are also going to look at the rear bumper ends as well and see what we can come up with there.

I'm also getting the last pieces together for the winch install. I have the mounting nuts on order, I have also got new GR 8 mounting hardware.
I am looking at rebuilding my winch now as mine is in rough shape and about 20 years old. I found this good write up on line and thought I would post this here for any that needs to do this. http://www.fourwheeler.com/techarticles/electrical/129_0708_warn_m8000_winch_breakdown/photos.html

Update:
I got the new tensioner for the A/C from Lordco as the Toyota part was going to be $130 my cost. I got it from Lordco for $40, normally I would spend the money on the Toyota part but seeing as this is not a critical system in the operation of the truck I went with the cheap part.
I have also ordered all the parts needed to reseal and lube the winch, I will be picking that all up this afternoon.
Also ordered all the parts to finish off the ARB Air locker install. They should be here in a couple of weeks, just in time for the install.
This weekend I am going to Tacoma to pick up a tail gate for my truck (color match and not dents like mine). I will also be picking up some rear leafs off a PU to use to make my custom front leaf packs. As well as a Grey dash pad that is not cracked.

Yeah its a keeper for now, all the stuff I am doing are things I have been collecting parts for months, in some cases years. So its not bad, I have also been selling all my Supra parts left over and getting some $$ back that way for the truck.
the only thing that is still an unknown is the front springs, I am going to try and build a leaf pack that will lower the truck about 2" but also give me about 100-200lbs more spring rate. I am also going to make my self a set of 3.5" eye to eye shackles fro the front to assist with lowering and also limit the droop a bit.

Sorry to hear the bad news man... our best to your family.
Thanks,
I was able to work on it for an hour or so last night. I got the winch all torn apart and it looks great inside. There was no rust or moisture, the grease looked like it was only a few years old and still in good shape. All the plastic bushings are like new and fine. After I opened it I almost bolted it right back together again but decided to clean out the old grease and put in the new marine grade grease I got for it. So I have it in the solvent tank at home and will clean it all up tonight. I'm also going to sand down and seal the cable roller as its got some rust and wear on it.

Tonight I was able to get the winch all back together and sealed up. I also prepped and painted the roller cage for the rope flair lead. I still need to give it at least one more coat and maybe 2, I hope to get that done tomorrow night before I leave for Winnipeg. That will give it time to fully dry and then Saturday I can put it all back together again.
I also have an appointment set for Monday to get the exhaust done and also weld on my rock sliders. Hope to get the A/C tensioned on on Saturday and have that all ready for charge in the next week if possible too.
I'm getting there, really have to push now I realized that Easter is like 2 weeks away and I need (NEED!!!!) to go camping that weekend. I'm not going to worry about getting the ARB in in time as that is not going to happen. Easter will be a good easy shake down for the truck, hope to maybe get about 1000kms on it that weekend.

I love were the truck has ended up height wise it looks fantastic!!! I'm a bit worried about the spring rates though, I think those two little springs did quite a bit, It dropped about 1.5" removing them.
Again love the high but may need to play around with the spring packs a bit more.

All I can say is so far it rocks!!!! I only drove it down to Langley for the exhaust but was able to get it up to about 90kms/hr on the bypass. I wanted to make sure I had the pinion angle right and it was smooth no more vibrations from what I can tell. Setbacks I picked up the truck last night (exhaust is awesome!!) went to roll up the rear tailgate window and nothing. Then I smelt a electrical burning smell and started looking for blown fuses. Well all the power windows are on one fuse and my side windows work fine. So I pull off the back panel to look at the motor and it looks like its a bit melted. So I button it all up and drive home (I have a spare tail gate at home with a motor). So My dad and me swap out the motor in the rain and its still not working. I get the gate open warning beep when I try and roll it up. But I do not get any clicks from the relays.
So at this point I am a bit stumped I just covered up the back window with some plastic for now till I can sort it out. Saturday I will be pulling apart my interior looking for the rear window relay box and see if I can test that.
Edit: Randy was so busy at the shop yesterday he did not get to start on it till later and that meant that I was not able to get the A/C charged but that's OK I need to get another permit to AirCare it too. We also found that my cat is 1/4 plugged and will need replacing at some point (hope it will pass are care as is).

Don't rely on their online search as you may not find what you're looking for. Call them, they're a really nice company to deal with... and they're :canadian:ian :D

Those are great!
I was able to get the rear window up today. It turnes out that the relays for both up and down were cooked! The motor was also seized
I was abler t o get one replacement relay from SMI in Langley (again a great place!!!) I have an account there now and get a good discount :D, they gave me there display relay for 20c as they were out of stock till Wednesday.
So I replaced the one that was really melted and then found that the other one for down was stuck in the activated position so I had 12V at the motor all the time. Since I had SMI's last one and knew I needed another I took the one off the board that was for the rear wiper and moved it to the down relay spot and vala it works :headspin:!!!!!!!!!
I took the spare motor out of the other tail gate for now (its a bit worn and clunky raising the window). I will use it for now but it will be replaced soon. I took apart my sized one and was able to free it up, the thing was cooked. I just need to replace the brushes and I think it will be good to go......SWEET!!
Good day overall, glad I got it closed up and was able to fix it for the time being. I will post pictures when I have a bit more time.

cool. Glad to here it all worked out for ya.
My truck being a Surf is always a little different. The control box does not have the same connection, although the relays are all the same. so every time I see one in the wrecker I check for the black box. I have quite a colection of relays now. The only thing left is to pull mine and actually replace the burnt ones. My window will not go down by the key. It only works from the driver position switch rite now

Cool, yeah I know from my years working at Toyota in parts that almost every year had a different control box and color case (mine is blue). Your problems sound more like the key switch maybe not working. If its going up and down from the driver switch then the relays are working. The key and the switch in the front both use the same relays. I still want to find a new relay box as my board is burnt and the case is melted. Once you get into it its quite fun the trouble shoot it all.
When you get to the point of replacing the relays make sure you have a soder extractor. It makes it much easier.

SO I have decided not to rush and stretch my bank account to get this done for Easter, I just ran out of time. To go comfortably I would need to get 10" shocks at the bear minimum. But would have liked to have a bunch of other stuff done as well as some time on the road to make sure I have no issues. So I am going to take it slow and aim for May long weekend now.

Well I put a permit on the truck with the plan to charge the A/C today and then be able to get the front of the truck back together and the winch stuff all finished. Steve's work just let them all know today that they can no longer work after hours but of course I had already got the permit for the truck.
Good thing I wanted to try and get the most out of my permit and had already taken it though air care today (passed by the way and got a quick pass at that).
So I am not looking for somewhere to get my A/C done, it needs to be vacuumed down for a good amount of time as its been open to atmosphere for months. I have the new condenser/dryer as well as PAG oil. If any one knows of a portable A/C repair man that can come to my place and save myself the extra $$ on another permit would be great.

Well with the truck being on hold again I have been researching ways to make it feel more stable on the road. I am looking at adding a front sway bar to it in hopes it will feel a bit more stable on road.
I have found two solutions:
1) The Cheap http://home.4x4wire.com/erik/4runner/sas/#swaybar
2) The sexy http://www.currieenterprises.com/CESTORE/antirock.aspx

So FYI, I finally installed the Dave'z Offroad No Death Wobble Shackles. They suck! Well let me clarify that. They are fine now that they have been totally modified and are in.
First off, they came uncoated. Not a huge deal but they weren't exactly cheap and all the other companies coat the damn things.
Second, the bushings they provided were the wrong size.
Third, the sleeve that goes in the bushing was WAY to big. Their solution, freeze and drill out the bushing. *** (can I say that now?) How about giving me a sleeve that is the right size? So I had the sleeve turned down by a machine shop to the right size.
Fourth, after trying to install it I realized the bottom sleeve is also to long. So I had to cut it down.
Fifth, the spacers that go between the shackles and spring eye are too small, I had to try and find some large washers to fill up the gap.
Sixth, and I don't know if this is a problem yet but I really can't see the 1/2" bolts that they use for these things holding up. I'm pretty sure I'm going to bend them on my first axle twisting trip. We'll see.
So for anyonyone thinking of getting these my advice would be don't bother. Buy the TG ones and for $12 you can get new shackle plates for them every year for the next 15 years for what Iv'e got into these stupid things.
After I bend the bolts the TG's are going back on and the Dave'z shackles are going through his front window next time I'm in Cali.
The only good thing I'll say about them is my front end is definitely stiffer now but I could have achieved the same result just by replacing my shackle plates and tightening them back up. Cost $12
I know Jeremy was talking about it, but I would suggest looking into a track bar, that will stiffen the front end up and help a bit with any bump steer if you have any.

I called and they have a pair in stock and can have them valved and shipped to me in 3 working days. All he needs to know is what the truck is used for and what kind of train I use it in and he can set them up for me. I also get a free re valving at any point with them too. They are a bit more than the Bilsteins but I hear they are a better shock..?

Downsouth has been good to me in the past with my Bilstein stuff... hey have good service and pricing.

Well I have been able to sell a bunch of my Supra parts. So that has funded the final round of suspension work on the truck.
On the list are:
10" travel shocks
OMECS009FA x2 front springs
OMESB5 x2 spring bushings
OMEGS4 Shackles
OMED17XL x2 HD ad on leafs
I spent about an hour on the phone with ARB/OME today and gave them the specs on my set up and he looked it all over and said it should be perfect with the HD leaf, said I maybe able to get away with out it but said for the $20 they cost better get it and try. The place I am getting it from is going to drop ship it all from ARB to Blaine for me so that will save me some on the shipping.
I am also going to order the HD ARB compressor for my tires/locker and the rest of my locker parts to convert it over to the new seal housing style. I'm also going to order the parts to rebuild the locker, I will have it apart anyways so might as well.
I also want to get the parts together for a panhard bar for the front if I need it. I am hoping that the stock style shackles and lower OME leafs will negate the need for the panhard as I really do not have room for it.

Well I talked to JT's (gear and rear end place in WA) on Friday and gave them the parts that I needed to complete my Air locker retrofit. Got an e-mail yesterday with the prices and WOW I'm saving $150 getting the parts though them. It was going to cost me $250 cnd and its going to cost me $101 us though JT's.
So today I will be ordering them and get that on its way.
Yesterday as well Sero scored me some 10" travel BDS shocks to get me going till the Bilstines are off national back order. (Thanks a tone Steve!)
I have also found the best deal I can get on the HD ARB compressor is 4wheels parts in Everett ($214). SO I will order that as well once I have the rest of the ARB stuff on the way.
I have still not ordered the OME springs and stuff yet, I should be doing that shortly.

I installed mine in the engine compartment on the pass side on top of the fender well.
I welded up a mounting bracket to hold it level. There was/is two factory holes/nuts that I used then drilled two more. Been in there for a year and still works great. That is the intake side so it doesn't get overly hot there.
I use mine for airing up right now but also wanted it for a future front air-locker. :woot:
I went to P.A. and got some fittings, quick release and a 20ft flex hose to plumb the small reservoir tank for a airing up.
It's a killer pump. I can do 3 trucks all in a row from 20psi to 35-40 without stopping..

I really wanted the larger ARB compressor... but the mini one came free with the locker. Last truck had 33's and the cig-lighter pump took forever... need a new plan cuz I'm on 35's now.
May end up buying the larger compressor and mounting both... one for the locker, and one for airing up.... but I guess I can sell off the mini one still if I get the big one.

Yeah I want to get mine under the hood too, I have a V6 though and there is very little room in the engine bay with the 3vz. I'm looking at moving some things on the drivers side fender well (coil/igniter and cruse) to make room for the pump. I think that's what Axel did to mount his.
I will worry about that tho once I have the spring installed and stuff. Still need to install and build the ARB Air locker too.

Well today I got down to Seattle and went to the ARB warehouse to get my OME parts. It all looks very good quality.
I stopped at 4wheel parts on my way back and got a ARB tree saver and Tire inflation kit for my ARB compressor.
The the last stop was in Blane at the postal service I use to pick up all the Air locker rebuild parts. So I am all set to get the front suspension all buttoned (other than 10" bilstine shocks) I have some 10" BDS shock for now. I can also get started on the Air locker install.
I think tomorrow I will work on getting the rear 3rd out and maybe start on swapping the springs over. Hope to have the springs all done by next weekend and be working on plumbing in the air locker.

Only had an hour or two to work on the truck today but I was able to get the rear 3rd out. Found some strange wear on the face of the gears as well as the cost side. Looks like the gears are breaking down or have been damaged by something. They are Yukon gears and there was no metal fillings in the oil when drained, magnet just had the usual dust on it.
The gears only have about 10,000kms on them so not sure what is going on, may have been from getting them installed 2 days before a 4000km trip. I tried to babe them and did do the 10km run and full cool then a 20km run a full cool when they were first installed. The oil was changed mid trip and looked metaly and cooked (break in oil). Guess that's what did it :(
So now I am adding new 4.88's to the list and a master rebuild kit (again).
I got the front jacked up and ready to start work on the spring swap, I still need to ad the extra OME leaf to the pack too. I got some Red Line supper molly lube for the bushings too. The OME shackles are a work of art, way way nicer than the TG ones I have now. They are set up so that you can not over tighten the shackles and damage the bushings too. They have a TQ spec and all.
hope to have a bit of time to get the springs swapped over tomorrow too. Well see.....
Nice to be working on it again! :verynice:

Front springs are all swapped, stock length OME shackles installed. The truck right now sits about the same high as it did with the modded TG3" springs. But the OME springs have not settled in at all yet and I would expect to get about an inch of settlement out of them.
The quality of the OME stuff is impressive, the shackles are a work of art and go together very easily. The springs look good and have some good engineering in them.
Trying to track down a R&P today and get that in time to pick up on Wednesday.

No problem, I am on a mission now to get it done, have a trip coming up end of July that I need it for.
I did my SAS in 3 days (2 years of tweaking since) that was with a car hoist though. I had my axle all built before I started and everything was laid out and ready to go. You can also put in the frame tube and weld on the front hanger before you cut anything off to save you some time too.
If you are going for a low SAS set up and over all lift then I would keep the stock suspension in the back. Just get some OME spring and longer shocks with a pan hard drop. With the way my truck is set up now I would have gladly stayed coils in the back.
Most of my stability problems over the last few years have been in the back. its still something I am working on and trying to over come.
Last nights progress was I got all templates made to reinforce my ARB bumper and give it a few more attachment points to the frame. Also made a template to make the tow points on the ARB bumper more useful.
I also measured out the new rear bumper and have a game plan for that. Just going to make a Google scetchup model of it and then get material this weekend I hope. Should look and perform much better than what I was going to have on there. Will also have a added bonus of a lighter bumper in the end.

Well tonight I got the Air Locker all updated to the newer floating seal housing style. Looks in good shape inside all the shims look in good shape. The out side of this locker has seen better days after having a ring and pinion blow its got a few battle scars but nothing on any critical areas.
Picking up the Nitro gears and mini install kit tomorrow night as well as the ARB compressor. So hope to have it all back together and in the truck saturday baring any problems.
Also looked around the engine bay and started laying out were I want to mount the compressor and the fuse panel. I found a spot that should be fairly dry so I will make a mounting plate and mount it there.

No way... It's couch night tonight... not feeling the love tonight. Been a hard day of head throbbing, nose running etc... had the light off in my office for part of the day. Sleep.... sleep.....

Yes I did, got the diff stuff and compressor. God hassled huge at the border, car searched and all. After paying my $60 in tax I was on my way home an hour later. Everything looks good, the compressor got bounced around in its box a bit and has a scratch but nothing that will keep me from using it. It was packaged well it was the ARB box that the compressor bounce around.
Taking all the diff stuff to my "guy" tonight in hopes he can get it all done for me by the weekend (not likely).

Say Hi to your "guy" tonight... gotta get him out camping this summer.
So the compressor was banging around in the ARB box? Funny... the compact compressor comes in bubble wrap and inside it's own box within the box. Well packaged. Sucks that it was knocked around. At least it's cosmetic.

Well got the diff dropped off to my "guy" as Kelly puts it.
Then spent the next 4 hours installing the compressor, only got it mounted though.....man what a *****! I mounted it right were I remember Axel having his (its really the only place for it). Had to remove the fender (first time coming off the truck in its life) broke one bolt, not bad considering its almost 20 years old. Drilled my holes and went to mount it but I drilled the holes wrong (pay very close attention to what way the compressor mounts to the plate). once that was fixed there was an hour of fighting trying to get the bolts to stay in place and move the whole setup under the fender lip to feed the bolts though the holes. I like were it is and it will work well there though in the end.
Tonight I am taking off, tomorrow I will be at it all day. Want to get the compressor all wired and working and run the air line for the air locker. Then replace the VC seal, oil cooler O ring, Distributor O ring and Throttle body.
Step by step......:eyes:

Just finished my Order for LED's for the inside and out side of my truck.
I wanted to improve the lighting inside my truck but not make anything look out of place. In my hunts I looked at all the different choices out there and most were not much better than the stock lighting.
I found a thread on Expo about a new LED suppler and was happy to see much better lighting performance and durability with there system. So I made an order and am going to try them out, there were lots of good reviews on expo.
http://www.massifled.com/shop/strip_lighting/
I ended up getting there 5 strip pack of bright white 3" strips and two 3" reds.
I'm hoping to use 3 whites in the cab (2 front and one back), 1 in the engine bay to light it at night and 3 in the rear of the truck some were to light the area around it. The two reds well be placed one front and one rear on a separate switch so Robin can read a map at night driving and I can still focus on the road with out glare from the normal white light. It will also be great when "some one" needs to get up at 3am and use the washroom when we are sleeping in the truck.
I'll update once I receive the LED's with a install and impressions.

In the last 8 days working on it I have only taken 3 pictures, I got no time just need to get it done. Got a big trip end of July I need it for and I want to have enough time on it to break in the new gears and work all the bugs out.
This weekend I got the roller flair lead all back together with poly rollers for my Amsteel blue rope. Installed the ARB compressor and rear locker solenoids. Replace drivers VC gasket, Dizzy O ring and cleaned out the thoughtly body and intake piping. I also resealed the lid on my Air flow meeter that some one hat cut out and not resealed.
I got all the steel on Saturday to finish reinforcing the front bumper to the frame and the spring mount to the frame. Hope to get that cut out this week and ready to weld on.

Started to get to work on the Oil cooler leak last night. I had spent part of the night at my friends shop working on the 3rd but the bearing splitter we got was not up to the task so we are taking it to another shop today to get it all pressed off and on the new pinion.
The oil cooler was a mess, I got the coolant lines disconnected (need to get more coolant now) and then removed the cooler body. I had the 2 O rings for the main sealing surface but not the brass crush washer. So I have ordered the crush washer and both coolant lines for it and hope to have it all back together tonight. Should also (if all goes and planed) have the 3rd back and ready to install!
Almost to the point I can insure it and drive it again. I got 3 weeks to get the new gears broken in! I still have a tone of other things to get done but none that prevent it from driving.

I have a serious bearing splitter if you need to borrow... not a mini thing, this thing is for large bearings like my 14b SF.

Got the last of the oil leaks fixed, the oil cooler was the last one two new O rings and a new crush washer on the bolt. I also replaced the coolant lines going to the cooler ($80 later) its all done. I also flushed the cooling system and Shampooed the engine to get all the oil left from the leaks off. So now I have all the oil leaks fixed on the engine and the engine looking like new.
I need to get the front of the truck up higher to get all the air out of the cooling system but can not move it till I get my diff back. Hope to have that back tonight so I can install it Friday and have the truck mobile again.
Once its drivable again I will be taking the plates from my G35 and putting them on the 4Runner. Then I can get the A/C charged and the last of the things done that I need the truck mobile for.

Well ended up damaging the seal housing of the ARB to the point it would have torn up the O rings so I had to order a new on on Thursday. I got it over night from ARB thanks to JT's (great service BTW). I grabbed all my diff stuff from the person I had doing it and decided to take ot to some one that had done ARB installs before. I contacted Ryan from Desterbed Eng and he has all the parts to complete the build of my 3rd now I hope. He said he would have it ready to go today or tomorrow so I can finally get this nightmare behind me. I have over $1400 into installing this ARB air locker now. Lesson learned do not by ANYTHING used!
This weekend was a long one for me I took the Friday off and was able to focus on the truck Friday and Sunday. So with out having the rear end back in I decided now was time to work on the front bumper. Its and ARB for and IFS truck and with the SFA I needed to cut of most the frame mounting to fit it. So I started work on attaching the bumper more securely to the frame. I started with tieing it into the front spring mounts and using the long bolts from those as a mount. I then put on a pice of 3/16th L brake along the front spring perch and drilled 4 holes for 1/2 grade 8 bolts to bolt it though there as well. Then welded the 3/16th L to the 3/16th plate I tied into the spring bolts. its about 10x more secure on the truck now and i hope it can handle the pulling the winch will give it.
I also welded up the holes that were cut in the bumper for the Piaa driving lights (looked awful). so I got that done and then sand blasted the inside of the bumper were it was rusing and then sealed it all with POR15 inside and out. Once that set up I then coated the bumper in 3 coats of Duplicolor semi gloss black. Loos ok, need to clean up a few areas still but its functional.
Then I moved on to mounting the M8000 in the bumper, I did not want the solenoid box on the top of the bumper cutting down air flow to the cooling system so I mounted it behind the bumper on the pass side. should work great there from the looks of it. The cover will not fit but I do not think that cover really dose much. I will monitor the solenoids and make sure I do not have any issues over time.
With that I hoisted a now very heavy bumper into place to measure and make all my cabling. I need to find the Warn wiring diagram for this solenoid box and winch today so I can finish that tonight.
Making good progress now, once I get the winch all wired and installed then its on to the rear bumper and i hope to get that finished in a week or so. :woot:
Should be on the road as soon as I get the rear 3rd back from Ryan (tomorrow or Wednesday).
Pics of the bumper coming soon.

I cant see them either.
Not sure what the problem is, I have checked it from 3 different computers and 2 different IPs and have no problem seeing them.
Last night I got a good chunk of the wiring done for the winch. 1/0 cable for the 12+ and ground. 2 gauge for the F#1 & 2 and Armature, all cable is high strand count welding cable. All ends are compression fit with glue sealed heat shrink.
I also picked up my rear end from Ryan and its all good to go, he had no problems with the set up and tested the locker for 45min to ensure no leaks. The gear pattern looked great and the unit is ready for install finally!!! $1200 air locker install all said and done :(. Word to the wise start with a new locker and a professional installer.

Installed the air locker, damn thing fought me all the way!! Te copper line was not installed in a way that would allow it to fit the housing of the axle so I had the redo the copper line and make sure it was out of the way of the moving bits and the sharp sides of the axle housing. Think I have it all good to go now, I ran the air line on the pass side so it wa well away from the exhaust.
Tomorrow I'm taking a night off, I can't stand to look at the pos right now. Thursday I will try and get the breaks bless and oil in the diff ready for breakin. I still need to finish the winch wiring did not even look at it tonight. The only pics I got were of the copper line rerouting.

Back on all 4 tires. Got the truck off the jack stands and back on its own 4 feet. Bled the brakes....single handily.
Got the winch wiring completed and tested......all good there! I will still need to pull it off one more time to install the Grill after the AC is charged.
Tonight I hope to have all the odds and ends cleared up. I am going to put a permit on it for tomorrow and Sunday so I can get some break in done on the gears and start working out the bugs.
Now the bad part, I got a call this afternoon that I will be flying out to Cranbrook again on Monday night till Friday. I am a bit disappointing because I will lose out on some real driving time and also work on truck time. if I was not leaving Monday I would have transferred the insurance form the g35 to the truck but I need to leave the G35 in the extended parking at YVR now till Friday. So I will have a really hectic weekend and week when I get back. I leave for Oregon coast on Saturday the 24th and need to have all the bugs worked out gears broken in and comfortable taking it on such a long drive.
On the to do list:
Charge A/C (next saturday at Steve work)
Break in Gears (500kms min)
Wire Lights (hella 500's and back lights)
Install Grill and bumper for final time (after A/C is done)
Get Wheels swapped (install stock Toyota Aluminum wheels in place of heavy steel wheels) need to get the tires inside the fenders.
Install cat (mine is 1/2 plugged)
Try and at least get the bumper sides on the rear bumper.
Swap insurance
All of those are must do's as I do not want to be on the road with out them being done.
:(
p.s. Thanks Kelly & Steve for the hand last night.

Thanks guys!
Truck felt great to drive, rolls down the hwy at 105kms/hr nice and smooth. Got a bit of a tire balance issue but that will be taken care of when I can mount the tires on my aluminum wheels. The truck feels much more stable on the road the front end is much stiffer, still need to see how it flexes.
I made a roof rack for my pod so I will be able to put all the light stuff up there. I made it nice and low profile so I can cut down on drag.
I got the gears heat cycled on Saturday and then got about 300kms on them total so far.
The new gas tank I installed is a bit smaller volume than the one I had before, only took 64L to fill from dead empty. Old one was a 75L tank this one looks like its a 65-70L. Not a big deal right now but when I start doing longer trips it maybe an issue.
I also started marking out some of the rear bumper and am getting ready to tackle that next weekend. I would like to get the side pices done to finish it off a bit more. I am also getting an alarm installed next week as well beofre the trip. Bump stops are also getting done as well.
So finally have it back mobile, feels great looking forward to getting it off road and seeing how it handles that.
