I had been looking at the Magellan Crossover last spring but was turned off by a few things. One was a very poor feed back from users and second was the very poor customer service reported.
Now the only problem I see with this is there is not support for Canada or Alaska yet :( I am going to e-mail or call them tomorrow to see if that is coming or if there is some way to work around it. They have a modle for everywere but Canada including Russia .
If there is an option for this coming for Canada it will be on the top of my list.

Looks like to get the Canada content you need to get the Nuvi 550 and then get TOPO Canada. So on top of the unit its another $150 for the topo soft wear.
Still researching and also waiting to her back from Garmin.

If you need an SD card for your Nuvi 550... I had to buy a 3 pack of 2gig cards as it was cheaper to get the 3 pack than a single. Likely have to store the topo maps on the card inside the gps unit. CHEAP card for ya!

Response from Garmin,
"Dear Jeremy,
Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I will be happy to assist you with this. The Nuvi 500 contains a hybrid map of both the City Navigator North America NT (lower 49 states) and the US Topo. Given the fact that the mapping on the 500 is a combination of the two and not two separate map sets I don't know that they intend, or have the capability to do a combination map set for all North America. This most likely is due to the overall capacity of the unit. You may wish to look at the Nuvi 550 with the option of purchasing the Topo US and Topo Canada.
If you have additional questions or need further assistance please contact one of our Product Support Specialists at the number below.

So it looks like I will need to get the Nuvi550 and then use Kelly's Garmin Topo Canada.
Looking into pricing here for the Nuvi 550 now.

Ok I just talked to Garmin CS and asked them when the advantage of a 550 over a Nuvi 250 was other than the 550 being water proof......there is none!
The Nuvi 250 and the Nuvi 550 are exactly the same other than the 550 being water proof. So I can get a $200 Nuvi 250 and have it do all the same things, just need to put Topo on a SD and install it.
Best price in Canada I have found on the 550 is nothing no one carries them as far as I can find.
One thing I did find is that I can also make this work on the large screen Nuvi 5000 its got a 5" screen on it over the 250's 3". The larger the screen in the truck the better as far as I'm concerned.
The one thing that none of these do is bread crumbs, so there is not way of using it to back track.

Good info... so maybe I'll load up my Topo maps to my Nuvi 250 and tinker with it.
As for bread crumbs... that's what the laptop GPS I have is good for!!

Yeah I would like to know how that works out!
My only 2 reservations about the LapTop GPS is #1 the conditions it will be in, dust, bouncing around and heat (no A/C dust bowl inside my truck) #2 The size and mounting of it, I can get one of those mounts but then its still taking up a bunch of the already cramped room in my truck.
There is also the issues of power.

Realize this is an old thread but one thing you may want to consider with those Nuvi's is the antenae's.
I know the receiver in my nuvi 750 isn't anywhere near as good as my GPSMap 60Cx. Hence I use the Nuvi mainly for street and highway and stick with the 60Cx when I'm wheeling in BC forest cover. The signal lock on the 60 is incredible.

I'd like to tinker with one of them hand held offroad GPS's one day just to see how they work. I'm happy with the Laptop and Garmin GPS antenna that we put on the roof or on the dash.... nice big screen... but I need to make a laptop mount for it.

Yeah that's a good point Axel, I'm still totally up in the air as to what to get. I like the look of the Garmin with the built in GPRS radio too.
