I will post this up for the "Toyota guys" that are contemplating going to a dual case setup someday (Jeremy?)
So the other day I was pulling out of a grocery store parking lot and my tranny popped out of gear. Followed by a buzzing sound like stripped splines. Had to get the truck towed to my house for $250.
Turns out that the rear transfer case input shaft and coupler stripped out. I had a Marlin Crawler 23 spline input mated into a Trail (Junk) Gear dual case adapter.
When originally buying my dual adapter I did a bit of research and got suckered by Trail Junks claims that they're new bearing retainer was adequate. So I went with them instead of Marlins MC07 and saved a few bucks.
Well turns out they're bearing SUCKS!:mad2: It still allows to much axial movement and causes the coupler to wear out prematurely.
So saving less than $100 on the initial purchase is now going to cost me:
$250 tow truck ride
Upgrade to MC07 $400 approx.
New 23 spline input shaft $200 approx.
Can you imagine if this had happened on Hut 2 weeks ago:eek:
Well lesson learned. AGAIN! You get what you pay for. Why do I have to learn this one so often:confused:
Well hopefully Trail Junk will at least warranty the doubler and I can sell it for a few pennies to someone who needs to learn a lesson too.:slap:
Looks like the truck is down for a few more weeks. I'll post up some photos of the carnage when I'm done tearing everything down.
