View Full Version : Tranny wasn't the problem.

I will post this up for the "Toyota guys" that are contemplating going to a dual case setup someday (Jeremy?)

So the other day I was pulling out of a grocery store parking lot and my tranny popped out of gear. Followed by a buzzing sound like stripped splines. Had to get the truck towed to my house for $250.

Turns out that the rear transfer case input shaft and coupler stripped out. I had a Marlin Crawler 23 spline input mated into a Trail (Junk) Gear dual case adapter.

When originally buying my dual adapter I did a bit of research and got suckered by Trail Junks claims that they're new bearing retainer was adequate. So I went with them instead of Marlins MC07 and saved a few bucks.

Well turns out they're bearing SUCKS!:mad2: It still allows to much axial movement and causes the coupler to wear out prematurely.

So saving less than $100 on the initial purchase is now going to cost me:

$250 tow truck ride
Upgrade to MC07 $400 approx.
New 23 spline input shaft $200 approx.

Can you imagine if this had happened on Hut 2 weeks ago:eek:

Well lesson learned. AGAIN! You get what you pay for. Why do I have to learn this one so often:confused:

Well hopefully Trail Junk will at least warranty the doubler and I can sell it for a few pennies to someone who needs to learn a lesson too.:slap:

Looks like the truck is down for a few more weeks. I'll post up some photos of the carnage when I'm done tearing everything down.

Oh yeah... it's always fun finding out you should have spent those extra few bucks. (I tell my wife this regularly... she's the bargain shopper ;))

Glad to hear you found that weak point when you were on the road... and easily towed out. Yeah, would not have been fun if that happened at Hut... that would have been a not-so-fun tow out!!

WOW!

I was having a hard time with the fact that your tranny was the problem, just so uncommon.

Glad to hear that you found the real problem! I have been looking at that stuff and the TG stuff dose "look" ok I guess not!

Hope you can get it fixed soon and back on the road/trail.

I do not think I will have this truck long enough to do the dual cases. Thinking about changing trucks maybe, go for something I can drive daily again.

p.s. how much you want for the TG case adapter (I'm a sucker for doing things 2-3 times before doing the way I should have to start).

Sucks Axel. I think we all need to learn these lessons a few times. Funniest part is that we can't learn from each other's mistakes. We all need to learn for ourselves. I've always liked Marlin's stuff best.

Good luck with it.

Thanks guys. Jeremy let me get trail junk to warranty it and put a new coupler in it. We can talk then. I think it would be acceptable for a trail rig or trailer queen. It's not reliable enough for me though.

I think I just secured 2 top shift transfer cases, if I do this I will just keep with of them stock gearing and have a 5:1 low low. I'm looking at putting my truck back to daily Driver status in the next 6 months to a year. Hope to find a 3.4L at some point and get then in there before long as well.

Sweet!!! how hard was it?

Wasn't hard, I was just waiting on parts this whole time. I changed my tranny while I was at it. Seems to shift much nicer now. A lot tighter.

Check your pm's.
