Well i talked about it some in another thread but it is a go for sure now so figure this trip gets it's own thread.

I will be leaving August 4th from Salmon Arm and I have to be back in SA by the 25th. 3 weeks to get up and back. I will be going up the alaska highway through fort nelson to watson lake then turn off the AH and go north to ross river where I will turn N.East on the Canol road. want to try and get to Macmillan pass. once i get to a place that is impassable i will turn around and head back out on the same road. then at ross river head North to carmacks where i will meet up with the Alaska Hwy again and go to Dawson city. once in Dawson city find out the conditions on the dempster Hwy and see how far up there I can get before it is time to head home. on the return trip i will follow the Alaska Hwy all the way through whitehorse to watson lake and then turn south west and take the cassiar Hwy down. once at Terrace (or whatever town is there) turn east again and almost home to SA.

now i dont plan on rushing this trip. i will be stopping alot and camping where i want. doing some fishing and exploring. i get as far as i get. i am not setting alot of distance goals. i know it's a long way to go in a short period of time. from salmon arm to fort nelson will probably be a quick drive as i really feel that the scenery past ft. nelson is where it gets amazing. i have posted a similar thread on EXPO and have some interest and possibly only one other truck confirmed.

anyone that feels they have a vehicle that is prepared for a roughly 5-6000km round trip is welcome. as of right now i will be taking my built YJ and pulling my offroad trailer. after i pick up the GW and see what kind of condition it is in I may decide to take it instead if it can be ready in time. the V8 would be nice on a long road trip.

i would ultimately like to take 3 or 4 vehicles. not for any extreme recovery plans but it wold be nice to have the help there if needed.

i wont be floating the jeep over rivers or building pontoon bridges. if i cant drive across then i will turn back. i want to see the sights, explore some old mines and air fields i know of and have a relaxing trip.

so if you have any questions or comments feel free.

Sounds like a great trip. I like those trips that don't have a set "plan" for everyday! Would love to come but got family holiday plans booked already. Looking forward to your trip report (and pictures), when you get back:pipe:
I'm sure the scenery will be awesome:headspin:

Sounds like a great trip! Where are you finding the info on the old mines/airfields? Be a great trip to log/drop some geo-caches!!

well i lived in Ft. Nelson for 6 years and for 5 of those years i worked for Public Works and Government Services Canada as a surveyor for the re-construction of the Alaska Highway. i had access to all the old original maps of the highway construction and survey from 1942 as well as any subsequent survey work that had been done in the area or on the highway. and since we worked for the feds we spent most or alot of our time exploring instead of actually working...:D i still have alot of the maps that somehow found their way into my possesion and my memories of all the cool stuff we found. airstrips are dotted all along that route as they were stop over and refueling points for aircraft on the way to alaska. also there was quite a bit of mining done in the region. Copper, barite and i know where there are underground storage areas that were used to store explosives during the road construction along muncho lake that was all rock and had to be blasted.

as for geocaching...never done it, never researched it. wouldnt know what to do. send me some info or a link and i'll look it up. whats the whole idea of it???

Gotta say "DROOL" in regards to your access to all the old maps, I love looking at old maps.

GeoCaching is kind of like a scavenger hunt, or orienteering. Folks go out and plant a cache, usually a small waterproof container containing a log book & a few odds & ends. Cachers find the container, sign the log book & can trade the trinkets (take 1 leave 1). Check out the link:http://www.geocaching.com/

thought i'd update here as things changed for me this last trip home and i wasnt able to go as planned. i'm not letting anything get in the way this time. i will be getting home to Vernon on October 8th..ish. then spending a few days at home packing and getting ready then i'm off on this trip. there may be a few folks from different boards and such that i meet for a day or two along the way for some local wheeling as well, that will be nice.

i have already gotten over the idea of setting any goals or destinations. there is of course places and sights i want to see along the way but i am not going to say how far i'll make it. i'll get to where ever i decide to turn around.

i have to buy a new camera before the trip and will get lots of pics.

cant wait.
