Thought I would share my trailer build with you guys.

Picked it up locally after looking for a few months for one, I posted a wanted ad on craigslist and a guy sold me his for $600 which was an amazing deal considering what they are selling for right now!

Here's how it looked when I got it, minor rust, trailer has a few dings but overall not bad.

I had it sand blasted and then epoxy primed at quick-shot truck body in Langley, they were awesome and had great pricing.

I then cut out all the seam sealer spots that were bad and re-sealed everything. then I flipped the trailer upside down and ground down the rusty areas and painted those areas. I could have probably done a better job underneath but it was in pretty good shape with a thick rubber coating and I didn't see the point of fixing something that isn't broken. I just used tremclad on the areas I wire brushed and a thick coating on the axel and springs, hopefully this holds up ok.
I also replaced the bearings and all the bushings, the parking brake is a little sticky but it looks like it would be a pain to replace so hopefully it will be alright.

I then took the trailer to Jason at Cruisin offroad (http://www.cruisinoffroad.com/) and had him make me a lid for my new ARB Pilbara tent and also jerry can holders and extended fenders. He also made a slick propane holder on the front and a front support to stabilize the trailer. Here are some photos that Jason took.

I haven't actually seen it in person yet as I'm picking it up tomorrow, but it looks really good!

Now it just needs sandblasting on the raw steel and primer then some paint (Haven't figured out what colour yet).

I also picked up some 235/85/16 tires that I'm going to put on there. They should fit nicely without having to do a spring over axel, and remove any concerns with tire blowouts on the 20 year old stock tires.

Wow...what an amazing deal, $600 is a steal! I paid double and thought I did ok? lol

Couple of questions... how muchy for the lid? I want one for mine, and yours is basically exactly what I am looking for. Feel free to PM me if you dont want to publicize. Also looking for some fender extensions, running boards etc.

Very nice!! Oh and my handbrake was pretty sticky too. I put a bunch of WD40 down the line, works stellar now.

Mine... your twin trailer!

When I picked it up (brand new Cooper AT's)

Slapped some paint on her! Nearly done, just have to paint over the primer on the wheels and mount the tent.

Here's what I picked up to stabilize the rear of the trailer when camping.

Nice find!

Wow $600, no wonder you can afford a nice lid and more! These trailers are awesome. I'm still suspicious they are only a 1/4 ton, I've put waaaay more in mine! What are your thoughts on this? (I'm planning to load mine up with almost 1500lbs for my trip to flagstaff in May... Mostly veggie oil!)

GregB, there's not may wooden lids around, mostly aluminum but I'm building one if you wanna have a look at how it turns out. Cheaper but heavier!

Toycdn, you can be proud of your new toy! I see you still have your original wheels, didn't you buy new ones? I love the original ones and will be keeping mine and I'm even chasing a second set, hint hint!

Cheers
Mr. D

just as a comparison a yard of navijack will just drop the trailer onto its bump stops. thats close to 1.5ton or just over 3000 pounds.

being a short trailer the heavier you go i find the handling is not as good. it should handle 1500lbs but you will lose axle articulation.
i suppose they were designed 1/4t at full capability and to allow for axle articulation and as a rating for the trailer to be towed with the small Iltis. the axle i believe is a 3500lb rating.

I know most of the builds tend to use a strap of sorts to hold the legs together but i'm really not a fan of the look.

I know it's pretty much the best way because it allows the most adjustability for uneven ground etc.

Is it feasible to design some form of a collapsible bar that would fold up with the legs? Possibly with holes and a pin to allow length adjustment?
