View Full Version : Snorkel

So I found out that the Tacoma intake is a bit low in the inner fender last weekend (July 23) up in Princeton BC.

I now have a hydro-locked motor on my truck, which is sitting in Penticton and I'm back in Calgary working away to pay for the swap.

Good news is that I have an engine lined up and some guys to give me a hand with the swap.

For security and piece of mind in the future I will be going with a snorkel to move the stock intake up high enough that I NEVER have to deal with this issue again.

I know that Safari doesn't make a snorkel specifically for the 2nd Gen Tacoma's but the Hilux's can be adapted to fit. Just wondering if anyone know of a good place in Canada to buy the snorkel and where I can find the template for the Tacoma.

I will NOT be purchasing the parts from National in Calgary as they are a joke and have NEVER given me good service, so I am looking for other options.

Thanks

Did some digging and found this http://www.cruiseroutfitters.com/tech_2ndgenTaco_snorkel.html

That is bad news, sorry to hear that, I dont know anything about snorkels but it did get me to wondering if you have done anything for the diffs and transfer case and anything else that doesnt like water, and where on the trail did this happen? and how did you get it out of there? Maybe a report on it all?? Good luck with the swap.

PM Rydz (Paulo) on here...he's an ARB dealer. Safari Snorkels are done by ARB so he should be able to hook you up.

I'm just curious, where on the trail was there water deep enough to Hydro-lock your Taco?

Damn, that sucks. The price was a bitter pill to swallow for me, but I'm glad I bought mine before I had a problem.

I can't imagine your motor is cheap?

The group I was with were the first ones to make it the whole way through the trail. I only made it about 42 km in near the lake and the old log cabin. Seems its been a pretty heavy run off year.

Everyone else made it through, 1st and 2nd Gen Tacomas, FJ's, 4Runners, Land Crusiers, I was the last one to go and I guess I missed the line or dropped the nose vs. the rear or who knows, but she sucked in some water and was done. :(

I have a motor lined up out of a wreck, truck arrives back in Calgary Tues or Weds and then we go to town on the weekend (Aug 6) to do the swap.

From my research there is not a snorkel specifically for the 2nd Gen Tacoma, it an adaptation of a Hilux one, just never done it, a little nervous about buying the wrong one and cutting up my fender, but its needed now.

That does suck... I'm also curious where it was... there is a pretty deep puddle by that one old cabin.

Yeah, PM Rydz (Paulo)... he's a vendor on the forum and has some great product like ARB!!

For the engine is it done for. I have been with guys that have sucked water before and we drained it all out, got them off the trail and once they dropped the pan everything was good and they are still on that engine. For me I sucked water got it almost home and spit #1 out the block.
If it is still running have a good mechanic take a look at it. you might be good to go.
For snorkels I have dealt with Modern Motors before. A bunch of us Jeep guys deal with Broken Axel 403.237.7706. Dave put my lift in when he was still working out of his house and I think he is a ARB dealer as well. I rarely liked his work. and will be taking my MJ to him possibly the lift but for the regear for sure.

Sorry to hear about your luck. I have a buddy in a R50 Pathfinder that did the same but got lucky and was able to get it going again after the usual recovery steps. I know my snorkel has saved me a few times.

Here's a link to an adapted 2.8L Helix snorkel on a 2nd Gen Taco. I think it looks great and i love this guy's build. You may have seen it before.

Ohh man! yeah, I got towed to Penticton with ABBA towing, and then Mario's got my truck the rest of the way home. BTW Mario's was a fantastic price, and good service, just hard getting a hold of.

Yeah it was a bummer, but all part of wheeling without a snorkel right? Cruiseroutfitters was the only one who has the template for the 2nd Gen Tacoma which I like.

The good news is that I have a used engine ready to swap, and I have a few guys lined up for this weekend to do the swap.

I will also try and find the video of the puddle, its in the latest video from CT4WD, the puddle is the one that the dark blue Tacoma is coming out of.

It is a small world! Great service btw, got me and my truck safe and sound to Penticton.

Yeah, I was talking to the group today (during the swap) and they said you dropped by the campground, glad you got to meet the group from CT4WD.

You live in a beautiful part of the world, lucky you!

So got the swap done, then took a holiday, now I am back on the trails and had a great trip on the weekend.

Thanks for the info Paulo, I will keep it in mind. Do you also have the template for the second Gen Tacoma's?
