I can't imagine working in a place like this. The scale of the parts just blows my mind! (oh not to mention the lack of safety gear!)

Enjoy!

That's a cool post considering two of us here are marine engineers...
We are currently only running on one engine as the other one has 3 cracked cylinder liners...and we have no spares! It's a big order considering the liners are about 3 meters tall and almost a meter wide...
Here's what a dead bearing looks like...this was last year and caused the ship to end up spending 10 days in dock to fix it.
The bearing failed, overheated and caused small cracks in the main bearing journal of the crankshaft. We had to get a special team flown in to grind the crankshaft in place. Interesting to see....

So when you get a bearing failure like that one... you're obviously going to have some problems but I'm curious what sound a crankshaft that weights a few ton makes when a bearing fails

haha mark... that sucks. first 12 days on here, one pipe rupture, one hydraulic pipe failure, and an engine room fire. good fun eh?
on the note abotu shipyards, ive spent a month in one in japan, and another in china. will post up some pictures when i get a decent net connection.

It's makes a very loud thumping noise! The Chief Engineer had us run the engine for 18 hours before we found the problem. I don't think that helped...
Cody, sounds like fun....finding some good spots for the trip? Learning Spanish?
Wow there must be some serious insulation around that engine for everyone around not to hear that racket, looks like fun.

You don't so much as hear it as you feel it! My cabin is on deck 10 and I could feel the extra vibration there...
hahaha that's awesome. Some serious huge engines you got there

Nothing a little bearing grease and Leather cant fix.......for a short time
Friend of mine got a Dodge Turbo Caravan about 15 years ago started knocking the next day. He opened it up and the PO had taken a leather belt and a bunch of bearing grease to replace the big end bearing that had failed LOL. It lasted 120kms before it wore through the leather.

Safety gear is for woosies :D
Reminds me of around here at our shop. Hell, I'll tackle anything with a set of sunglasses on :D To date we've lit ourselves on fire countless time welding, don't know how many figures and knuckles have been bashed up doing stupid things. Don't even want to get into "stands" used to prop up trucks and trailers either...
Worst so far was torching out the rear brakes on a friend's car last spring with a plasma cutter, ended up putting myself in the hospital for the night after my heart stopped twice on me... yeah a good batch of pot cookies just *may* have had something to do with it, but I sure learned a hard lesson about the effects of carbon monoxide in the process!! I'm still living with occasional chest pains from it, a year later.
I love the pics of the guys with their face down close to the lathe with no safety glasses on, and people wonder why them oldtimers all have fingers missing and buggered up eyes! Reminds me of this:
