So I fill out all my passport info, get my pictures, verify all my info and luckily have a day off to go stand in a line to get it finalized. Except the b . s . that the first letter of my last name on my birth certificate is worn off.... maybe due to the fact it's a 26 year old piece of paper that we're not legally allowed to laminate! I've got a wallet full of all matching identification but 1 letter rubbed and I have to file a damaged birth certificate, pay $25 and somehow come up with retarded information like how much I weighed at birth, who was the doctor and find a guarantor somewhere back in Ontario that I haven't spoken to in at least 8 years... nothing but a pain in my a . .

That sucks man! Even more justification for me to continue keep my birth certificate in a safety deposit box....

X2 I carried it with me for a few years but now it stay in a nice secure dry rub free area.

Passports can a pain in the ass to get if the paperwork is not 100%. I always got first thing in the morning and line up takes way less time.

Last time I got it I needed it rushed as China would not give me a visa with out a passport that had an expired no less than 6 months from return date. Mine was 5 months :S. I was just renewing though so it was not a big deal......never did get that visa though.

Passports are super easy if you have all right stuff...and it's a hell of a lot quicker (and easier) to get a new passport compared to getting a new birth certificate.

Ya it's my own damn fault for carrying the certificate around with me but I've never had a passport so it's always been with me for ID checks. Got off the phone with my Mom in Ontario to get all the information so all that is left is the gauranter... which I need to find.

I believe any family member with a current passport can be a guarantor now. Double check to make sure tho. If not have your Mom find a family friend that knows you that is an Engineer, CGA, Doctor or Lawyer.

This is a guarantor for the birth cirtificate now, can't be family, gotta be a doctor, lawyer, priest, yadda yadda yadda. Father in law might count working for the BC government so I'll find out tonight if he can sign it.
