Those are really nice but the price is ridiculous. I bought a Coleman Extreme cooler and a block of ice lasts a week. I can't justify spending that kind of coin to keep my beer cold.

Sure are nice. We need to start planning some week long trips if you want to justify buying one of those.

Those are about $100 or so right? How do they work? I guess they are good maintainers, but not good at cooling things down? Been thinking of one for quite a while...

They work really well. I think it was almost $80 after taxes. This was a few years ago. I sent my wife to Can. Tire to buy a cooler one weekend, she came back with that thing and I freaked.

"YOU SPENT HOW MUCH ON A COOLER?"
"But it keeps ice for a week."
"YA SURE IT DOES!"

Well it does. As long as you buy a block and not cubes. Cubes don't seem to last as long. It will definitely cool your beer off and keep it cold given enough time. I'm sure it doesn't work as well as the ARB fridge/Freezer and you have to drain the cooler, but $1000 US. sure buys a lot of ice.

Probably good thing I can't afford the ARB. I would just load it with Ice cream. lol.

After finding I have water contamination and on a few occasions raw meat water in all my food. The cost of a fridge freezer starts looking a bit better. I still cant bring myself to paying $1k on that though, its a lot of gas $$ and Ice.

What I have started doing now is taking one large cooler and one small one. The small one I fill with raw meat and only raw meat. The large one is were I put the rest of the food. I also no longer use ice or ice blocks, I freeze all my drinks before leaving and also freeze a case (24) of 500ml water bottles. I also freeze a large 2L pop bottle (filled with water) and use that in the place of the block of ice.

Doing these simple things I no longer have any problem contaminated food and I get a bout 4 days out of this setup. If I'm going for any longer I'm packing caned food for the rest of the trip.

One day I will have a fridge for my food needs though, maybe before I do the Dempster.......

i picked up a cooler at canadian tire for about 100 bucks and it just plugs into the cigarette lighter... its really good especially for camping.. check there.. or pro bass shop has them too. they arent digital or anything fancy and they will not freeze but if your gone for 5 days or so it will keep your food... try those.. see if that will work for you! this one does the job pretty good..

I got an Engle 60 last year when the dollar was good, very nice fridge and a great thing to have camping. It can actually freeze beer in the bottles about 50 of them if your not careful :D

Plan to get it mounted permanently on my trailer soon:)

My new plan is to just wheel with Gavman and drink cold beer out of his fridge.:poke:

Looking at one of these down the road a bit, maybe for next season depending on house and job.

Like the idea of a more resilient case.

The one Jeremy is talking about is in a whole diffrent league. Mine will only bring the temps to about 20 degrees below ambient.

I love my new ARB fridge/freezer.....very tough and its been to Baja and back with no issues. Yes it was expensive and I did manage to get one at cost from an off-road show due to the top being a bit scratched up, but like any other ARB product, its tough and won't let you down.....and that's the best thing when you in the middle of no where.

People are usually amazed at the gear on my truck, but I just saved for the parts I wanted and not the parts I could get away with, its taken me 4 years to get the truck where it is now, with no compromise. Everything I need and nothing I don't and the best I can put on the truck.

funny you should say that casue I had a 1993 5.0 fox body that I fixed up with a bunch of goodies including supercharging.

I sold it to get the Tacoma and I'm glad I didn't add up those bills....

the Tacoma is a keeper, even when its done It will become a trail rig.

Just an update on those Coleman 12V coolers be very careful with them. My parents are on there 6 month trip and with the truck parked over night (12hours) it drained both there battery's (GMC 2500HD Diesel) and the truck would not stat in the morning. Good thing they have some RV road side assistance.

Well today when I was at the ARB warehouse I was able to take a close look at ARB Fridge. Its a very nice unit, solidly built and very nice lay out of the controls and interior. I really like the built in LED light, great idea! Having all the controls were they are placed is nice too there very easy to see and operate. The latch on the lid is very good as well, good positive lock.

I was glad to finally show Robin what I had been talking about in person, she was thinking it would be like a small beer fridge like in a home. She was impressed.

So needless to say in my quest to stop being cheep and having it cost me twice as much in the end I am going to hold out and get the ARB unit.

Our ARB fridge has been in use for over a year now, and we've been really happy with it.
It was purchased to replace the propane/electric fridge in our camper that died shortly after we got it.

After dismantling the fridge to get it out of the tiny door in the camper I gutted the space it took up, made some pantry cupboards and still had lots of space for the ARB.
It takes up less space, and holds more - Bonus !

We normally have it set at -2 C, that's cool enough that frozen meat put in the bottom will take a day or two to thaw (Vacuum packed steaks/hotdogs etc) but milk/OJ/beer doesn't freeze.

And... when we do an extended overnight in the Samurai, it unstraps from it's cubby in the camper and ties down in the back of the Sam.

It also goes from +20 to -2 in under an hour... couldn't do that with the old camper fridge !

That's great info!! Once I stop spending money on the truck I will be able to start getting stuff like the fridge and other things I am lacking.

p.s. there is a Jaguar above your fridge ready to pounce!

I just got my ARB fridge, and needless to say I think it's the best thing EVER!!!

I bought it planning my honeymoon to BC (I mentioned this on other posts) as we plan on overlanding it for 3 weeks. Not to mention this thing is a wicked beer fridge for in the office....or where ever you want it!!

Right now, it's tucked aside my couch hidden from everyones view....they always wonder why I am able to get beers without moving to far.

I just got my dual battery kit for the Jeep JK, installing it tonight, and will be working on my shelves / drawers in the back of the jeep to mount the fridge to and leave it in there 75% of the time (Winter I will keep it in the house.)

If anyone is on the fence thinking they might want to buy one, I say DO IT!

With Duty, to my door in Northern Ontario from Toyota of Dallas or where ever, it was $1000. Not bad at all!! (Oh, and I also bought the tie down kit, so if you exclude that you might be better off....)

MAN!!!! I want one so bad!!! RubyRunner was just telling me about his plan to stop in at ARB at the end of the month to get one too. I have honestly wanted one for years now, I know it would be great and be just what I need.

Its down to the fridge this year or a hi-pinoin to finish the truck off. Really debating the two, I really want both but also really want to have all the truck mods done. Then I can worry about getting stuff like the fridge and stuff later.

Ah so torn, the fridge would be great for our Oregon coast trip in 2 weeks too though........money tree anyone?

We got our ARB Fridge Freezer for a 3 week overland trek to BC last year.
Unfortunately, the big trip got postponed, but it's been great on shorter 3-4 day excursions.

I've rescheduled the big trip for later this summer - we are also going from Ontario to BC.

I use a ratchet strap wrapped around the handles to tie-downs in the Camper cubby hole and it does a great job of keeping it from moving around.

We had it shipped to the UPS store in Niagara Falls USA, and a friend picked it up for us... saved a bunch on shipping that way,

3 way is nice, not as efficient as the ARB, but, a much more affordable price.

There's a good tread on Expedition Portal this unit.

I have that one only a few years older. It works well but killed the battery in my last truck pretty quick.Works well on 120 and i havent tried the propane yet.To be honest i tried for over a year to give it to Mini on here and he wouldnt take it.Now that i have it back home it is collecting dust.

According to the specs it does draw a lot of power. ARB's is 2 amps or so, this unit is 6. But once in camp you can use propane.

Looks ok, but for the price I would look at some of the cheaper fridge freezers mentioned earlier in this thread.

Those ones you posted are not that great they will kill a truck battery in 12 hours and on a hot day it will not keep the food cold and safe. I would save the money that you would have gotten that one for and get an actual fridge freezer.

Geez guys this is canada not the tropics of Australia.

We have plenty of cold enough weather for nearly all the year and coolers do more then well enough to keep food cold In our relativly short hot times of the year.

Keep your ice in a sealed container that way you dont get soggy food.
Small water bottels work great and you can drink them also . Put your food in frozen and if your cooler has a drain keep it open a tiny bit if your worried about water.

No need to spend money when you dont need to especially if your simply a weekender.
if you are gone extended time then plan the type of food that will keep without a ref unit , and if you do Need one there are a fair number of them that are reasonable in price and work well.

That being said , if you get enjoyment out of it for the tecnical marvel that it is and not simply what it does then by all means spend the money and get the bling .

I think for most most folks that just want food to keep and beer to stay cold for the weekend the cost exceeds the value.

Just use some common sense and ingenuity dont be brainwashed and pack food accordingly for both months of summer.

I picked up my new ARB fridge this past Friday and used it for the long weekend.
2 words…. Love it!
I ordered it online and picked it up at a 4x4 parts store in Lynnwood, Wash ($699.00USD)

Did you know that 2deg Cel is a bit cold for beer, lol, gave me an ice cream headache!

Here are some features that are not noted on the brochure or website:
- It’s a “real” freezer/fridge with a proper compressor (which is made in Germany)
- Automatically switches from 12/24volt and a separate wire/plug for 120V
- 12/24V cord is not that long. It’s +/-5ft. It will not reach from the back of your SUV to your up front cigarette lighter.
- It has an interior light…(perfect for late night pop <cough> “beer” and hotdog finding.)
- Digital display (inside temp and set temp)
- Takes about a +/-hr to go from 18deg to 5deg.
- Battery minder/tender. “low, med, high”. If you have one battery you can set it to not kill your battery and leave you stranded. If you have a two battery set up you can run the fridge harder and longer.
- Lid lock for a tight vacuum seal.
- Lid easily pops off if you are in a confined space.
- Big/sturdy carrying handles.
- It’s not always “on” It cycles like a normal fridge. Depending how warm the ambient temp is and how often you open it…on average it comes on every +/-10-12min. for 1-2min.
- It’s fairly quiet. You can barely hear it and you could fall asleep in the vicinity of it.
- Solid construction.

It ran on my one truck battery for at least 16hrs with no issues (fridge set to 3deg Cel) Truck started right up.

However, there are some minor negative things that we kind of went “hmmmm” about…..
- The paint/exterior scuffs really easy (might have to invest in a travel bag)
- When full it can be fairly heavy... +/- 75lbs
- Only one compartment. Meaning, if you wanted to freeze something, everything will freeze. Not really a big deal since I’m not sure if I need to take ice cream camping…but you could take everything out to make some ice cubes!

All in all we love it! It’s really slick and think of it as a great investment!

I have 2 aux batteries and I have run it for 5 days without losing my battery power! Its expensive, but like all ARB stuff its pretty tough. It does mark up easy, but at least the outside is made of tough plastic!

I have 2 aux batteries and I have run it for 5 days without losing my battery power! Its expensive, but like all ARB stuff its pretty tough. It does mark up easy, but at least the outside is made of tough plastic!

I agree with this, and the other post. It scuffs way to easy.
I ran mine for 2 days, but I only have 1 aux battery. I dont know how low my aux battery went, but all was well! :) i had to shuffle many cold ones out for warm ones, so I did have a brain-freeze/icecream headache for a while but eventually i was feeling no pain.

All in all, price vs value......this thing is well worth it!!! No one says it only has to be used for camping, and it's like a normal fridge, you should leave it plugged in 100% of the time anyway so it doesnt kill itself!

I am testing it out again this week/weekend, and leaving it in the jeep running on 12v the whole time. so far so good, sipping a beverage out of it right now, and flipping steaks as I write this.

I agree, I got mine the Saturday I left and it worked awesome! I love it! I kept frozen burgers frozen for a week, and played quite a bit with the temp setup. I ran it most the time at -3c and went as low as -7c at one point to see how long it would take to freeze 12 water bottles from amb temp (3-4hours FYI).

It was such a treat! I really am glad I got mine!

You are right it dose scuff easy so I will be getting a transit bag some time. Good thing is its not paint and will not chip.

I only have one battery in my truck and ran it for over 30 hours one day and it fired right back up with out that drained battery sound. I had the fridge set to -7 at the time as well and half full.

Wanted to know the limits :D

One thing I have found since getting home and having it plugged into 110V is that is buzzes. There is a rectifier in the unit 110V to 12V adapter that buzzes when its plugged into 110V. Not a big deal as I have it plugged in the garage.

Just thought I would make a note of it in case anyone wanted it in a room of there house when not plugged in the truck. When its plugged into 12V is silent and very quiet when its running.

I kinda was trying to figure the 30 hours in a day thing LOL just teasin'

I tested mine on my bluetop, ran it for 2 days and no problems (I have a seperate bluetop for starting as well.)

I noticed a buzz in my fridge when plugged into AC as well.....but for now (until winter) i will be leaving it in the jeep full time. It's super handy to be able to offer someone a cold one for helping you when stuck. Not to mention the ability to carry meat from Costco when it's a 4 hour drive home from there. LOL.
