A few of us did a last minute Thanksgiving Day trip monday... went to Hale Creek & Secret Lake (I think... but I didn't make it due to truck problems).

Andrew (killer cruiser) and I brought our families... and it was my youngest one's first time wheeling (14 months)... and they all survived!!

First thing down Hale, we came upon a fallen tree... and it was the top section of the tree... 700 branches in the way. Off to work went Andrew & Aaron with their chainsaws... while the rest of us pushed and shoved branches out of the way.
There is a trail on the other side of these branches...

We all got through fine...

And some of us took a different crossing as the ledge looked too soft for the bigger trucks

Maverick (Andrew's dog) was about to do a crossing... and came to a screeching hault... funny I had the camera on him at the time to catch the action stop!!

We all went to Secret Lake... at which point just after the first culvert my underhood noise was getting louder... so Mike joined me in turning around while the rest kept going (maybe they have some photos).

I ended up having alternator failure in Abbotsford on the Hwy. My sister came and picked up my wife and kids and took them home while I waited on the tow truck.

And back home again

Great trip overall... still really happy with how the Burban is performing. Was really funny to watch Andrew's Cruiser tip and twist over rocky areas... and I would glide over them with the long wheel base. Long has some advantages I guess... haha.

Anyone have more to add from this trip?

Thanks for posting pics Kelly. I'll get mine up tomorrow.

I had fun, it was a good trip, and the Superduty did far better than I thought! Not as good as my old Cherokee, but still decent for a 7800 lb diesel !

Great shots.. looks like a fun day.
Too bad I missed out. My family would have had a fun time... especially with the RC Crawler!

The Toyota's are really starting to out number everyone else! :woot:

Snorkeled diesels may be able to ford deeper waters, but their bearings and seals are just the same as everything else though ;)

I'm a fan of longer wheelbase, IMO it works better if you're not in stupidly tight areas, plus the ride is unparallelled (assuming the same suspension setups), but to each their own. Great pics, were the trees dropped or they just wind fall? LR

I WILL POST PICTURES SOON. DOWNED TREES WERE WIND FALL. IN THE AREA WHERE WE CUT THRU THERE WERE THREE OR MORE TREES UP ROOTED, JUST NOT BLOCKING THE TRAIL.

I had such a good time & would love to go out again. I think some trail armor might be in the not so distant future though as a few things got dragged over things things but thankfully no permanent damage other than a few new pinstripes to my already thrashed paint.

Thanks for taking all the great pics guys.:verynice:

Yup. I must have missed the post. Grrrr! Right in my back yard 2! Now I'll be checking the forum every morning rain or shine. Hale creek is such a sweet area! If I'm not flying by at 79mph in my Baja, I'm always wheelin or quading it! Guess nobody braved the river bed? I've been runnin it the last few times up and am getting to know it pretty well.

They sure messed up the entry 2 secret lake didn't they! Last I was up there they had logged in clear and I was worried they may have blocked it. The rest of the trail is still all good though.

You didn't miss the post... it was a last minute text-a-thon.

You drive the river bed up and down?

Some times. The one I'm referring to is the river that you guys are playing in on the beach. I head up there all the way to the entrace of the hill on the back route out. It's super technical with loads of huge boulders! And lots of fun! I'll come along on every trip possible if I'm aware of them. Can't get enough of the outdoors and wheelin my truck!

If you're driving right on the creekbed up and down, I can see the adventure in it, but would that be acceptable to a Conservation Officer? I'm not sure on that one. Anyone have any opinions on that one?

MonsterToy

Ya, unfortunately conservation would have something to say about even driving on the beach down there! Apperantly the whole thing right up to the treeline is salmon spawning grounds. Always to high water line. Probly do just as much or more damage crossing the same creek as anyone driving up it would i'd imagine. Dipping the entire underside of a greasy truck vs. running tires through. Just went through the whole conservation issue at my grandparents place on Harrison lake there. We re-built a dock that has been there for 35 years. Now all of a sudden they want them all on stilts. Guess they lay on the lake bed causing the fry to not be able to hatch as easily. I've actually got a whole bunch of literature on it if anyone is interested. Certain times of year are safer than others. It's pretty crazy. Especialy when facing up to $500,000.00 fine!

I know there are issues with beaches on salt water areas... but no idea about fresh water areas etc. There is always the arguement that if you wash and rinse your truck, it goes down the storm sewers which can't be far off from driving across a river or up it for that matter. It's a touchy subject for sure depending on who you're talking to I guess.

The CO's have a very simple solution, if they catch you on any beach (salt or fresh) or river or stream you are endangering Fish habitat. It makes cents its just a matter of how long you want to risk doing till they catch you.

Oil and grease going down a storm sewer although not good is nothing like oil going straight into a spawning bed. The concentration difference is huge, I would not advise driving on any water or beach if you have the slightest worry about it.

Harrison already has slicks floating around from boat fuel spills and oil leaks but we do not need to make it worse.

Also everyone should have there trucks sealed up well and leak free anyways.

Just my .02c

p.s. Some of those pictures can be used as incriminating evidence if a CO wishes, I thought we had a CO on here after piper point?

MonsterToy
10-15-2010, 05:48 PM
For sure! Keeping our trucks sealed up should definately be a manditory practice if we want to keep enjoying and preserving the outdoors. No way I'd be anywhere near any impactable areas with a leaky truck! Or really anywhere if it could be helped. Good point.
