Changes to the ’09 models have me considering one of these.

In keeping within the context of this forum I note: a new stronger frame, longer leaf springs, an available heavier rear axle (reincarnated?), increased payload and of course “more powerful V8”. Additionally there's a new 6speed, better fuel economy, yada, yada.

The important change for me is the increased max payload; purportedly ~2,200lbs (1,000kgs) for 4x4 supercab with 8’ box. It would be easy for me to reach a 2,000lb payload.

I’m wondering though if this is “enough truck” to be running that close to max GVWR for off highway use. I’m thinking here many, many kms of FSR (and not putt-putting along) and as much side road exploring as I dare.

Any thoughts on this or the ‘09s in general?

Without question, I love the new front ends on the trucks. Looks like the Super Duty front end. If I was getting any truck it would likely be a Ford... and they are everywhere which must indicate that they're pretty good.

When it comes to payload capacity... I always see F150's with the back ends sagging down with what looks like a minimal load. I think I'd be going with a F250 for me... just for a little extra capacity etc.

We loaded up a full load of broken up sidewalks into a rented F250... and it was quite full from our backyard project: http://overlandcanada.com/forum/showthread.php?t=68 and the 3/4 ton was hanging a bit low... but not that bad. I'm sure an F150 would have been crying.

Anyhow... I'm overall pleased with the Fords... but due to load capacity only, I'd be going to a trimmed-down F250 (for cost purposes only).

Enjoy the truck hunt!

So, did you end up buying anything?

airbag helper springs really help out on pretty much any truck. And keep in mind, a 1/2 ton pickup will ride MUCH more comfortably offroad than a 3/4 or 1 ton. My SuperDuty is a pretty rough ride I'll tell you.

The '09 Fords have a lot of great features. Very nice trucks.

Ford trucks have always been my fav. But then I grew up with them in the family, so that may have something to do with it.

Nope!
I'm still wasting time...Has it been two months since I posted?

I have ruled out the half ton. Ford's giving $10,000 factory incentives right now on F350s :wow:
Probably go that route. Will keep you posted...
